any porsche people here?
« on: October 26, 2009, 04:44:35 PM »
i know it's a ways down the road but when i get my ssi checks and the retro-active pay i'm going to get myself a toy, either an air cooled beetle OR a porsche 914. back in the 80's i had a 914/6 for a couple of years and i'd like to take one of the cheap 4 cylinder 914's and build a 914/6 car. something thats strictly business, not a pretty show car, all go, no show.

How about a Ghia with a 914 engine?  I'd love to build one of those someday.

Maybe not as cool as building an air cooled car, but I enjoyed the 944 I had and it was fairly inexpensive to run. The 16 valve engines are quick even without the turbo, which is kind of a high maintenance part, and the car handles great with little set up. Not for icy roads ever though!

Ghias are easy to get.  I have one :)

You don't need to put a 914 engine in one, you can make more power just building up a VW motor.  A 914 is a VW motor really.  It is a type 4 engine.  You can build them to make serious power, but unless you are building a monster engine, it is easier to start with a type 1 engine and go from there.   A 1914cc engine (stock 69mm crank and 94mm pistons) with a good cam will get you down the road in a hurry.  I used to have a 1955cc (74mm crank 94mm bore) and it screamed.

Either way when you go to look for one here is a good site.  http://www.thesamba.com/vw/   The Samba is to VW's as this site is to SOHC 4's.

Oh and the rust will be easier to fix in a ghia and more parts are available for it.   I do like 914s though.

the last beetle i had was a 2400 type 1 motor (autocraft case) with a turbo and predator carb, it had 350 rwhp. i just loved the way my old 914 handled with that mid-engine combo and i've been seeing drivable fixer-uppers for 3,000 or so. just a grand more than a fixer-upper beetle here in south carolina.

There is a shop down here who specialize in air cooled VWs, and with that come Porsche's too.  They have had some very cool VW's come through, the owner recently picked up an old Ghia in trade for my old diesel golf.  Check out their website www.allaroundrestos.com.  If anyone would have leads on where to find old VW's and Porsche's it would be him.

The 928 was a pretty expensive car to maintain, even just for tune ups with dual ignitions(coils and distributors)
The fours were pretty reasonable to maintain especially if you did the timing belts yourself.
