If you want to polish without scratching, try FLITZ

some polishes, Solvol Autosol for one are abrasive, not hard for it to work if its constantly removing metal off the surface.

FLITZ, BTW will quickly and easily bring a Honda  frame up to original (see yourself in it) lustre, you will be surprised at how quick & spectacular the result is..

Performance coatings has fair prices to and quick turn around - just had my exhaust done by them.
Simichrome is great stuff, sometimes hard to find... It will give a mirror finish.
Never dull IMO scratches the surface too much, although I have a can of it laying around.

I'm going to have the engine I'm building coated by these guys.

Excellent finish and helps engine heat breath.

I've had good luck with Meguiar's #20 and it's only purpose is to protect finishes as it does not clean or polish. Works on clean surfaces, such as paint, aluminum, chrome and the original Honda factory applied clear coat. Not for use on rubber parts.

The pics of the ceramic coating that 736cc posted sure looks like a nice durable finish.

i like the titanium finish, but not for engine covers.  i do like that polished aluminum finish the best, prices?  where'd you get it done?
