Painted swingarm with Rustoleum Hammered. Here are Pics
« on: October 28, 2009, 06:25:22 PM »
I gotta tell ya. So far I really like this hammered stuff. Goes on really heavy and seems to be very hard. Has a nice textured look to it as well. Here is the swingarm off my 75 cb550. Came out fine for what I needed. Just covered the exhaust sticker with some masking tape and sprayed away!

Yeah that stuff is awesome. Makes me wish I could strip the whole thing down and do the frame and swingarm. Maybe next winter...

That's what I plan on doing before it gets too cold. I'll post pics of the frame next week!

Now I am sitting here thinking about it... If I DO pull everything off to do the frame and swingarm, I might as well do the motor too. And I really WOULD like to have a really nice bike come spring, not just a good runner... you're going to cause me a bunch of long nights, I think. At least my lady is in the background saying "do it"... We'll see what she thinks after a week of going to bed without me!

I don't know if Rustoleum has a different chemical makeup for its hammered finish but in the past I've found that Hammerite holds up to the elements better than does regular Rustoleum.

I saw a guy who had his whole frame done with it and it looked beautiful. I will use a low gloss engine paint on some of the motor, and do the fork lowers in the rustoleum, and clean and paint the wheels too. Its gonna be a busy winter!!!

I've used that stuff on furniture a lot. it's awesome and you can make a piece of wood look like a piece of metal. I like to use a foam roller and foam brushes and you can get really cool effects by dragging through in different directions to reflect light at different angles. it's also super durable.

i used hammered gold for my frame and it looks awesome.... and it took a week to harden i was kinda worried because for like 4 days my fingernail could make a mark in it but it is seriously hard now.... here she is (yamaha i know)... and it is chemically different because when it came out it kinda bubbled and seperated... kinda... and gave it the hammered look of the lid

how well did it hold up? did you use rattle cans? I'd be afraid to put that stuff through a gun. you'd have to thin it a lot.

@ thegabrielj Frame looks really good. I was lying in bed last night thinking "Black or Gold" over and over. I think I am still leaning towards black(more my style), but you and robdrobd have me convinced. I will start stripping mine down this evening.

What are ya'll's thoughts on cutting frame tabs and stuff off I don't need? I know there are a lot of guys out there that would say dont do it, its a classic, yada yada yada... But if I am stripping this thing all the way down, she will not be stock. Just curious what others think about "mutilating" a classic bike frame...

I am all about making it lighter and handle better. I would like a nice new set of piggy back shocks and the front fork setup off a more modern bike, but I also like the idea of keeping it kind of old school. I am sure the $$$ wont allow that kind of upgrade yet, but someday... Anyways I am looking forward to tearing into this thing and start cleaning everything... Too rainy tonight or I would probably still be out there!
