1977 XS 650 HELP!

Just picked up a 77' XS 650 for the right price of free.  It ran last in 1991 (original owner WOW) it was having problems with the stator etc so he let it sit in the barn.  Anyway almost 33 years later i found it on the side of the road.  NOW for the help..years ago a friend removed the stator ect and since has been misplaced, not a big deal i just picked up two parts engines.  Well anyway, the kickstart moves, but it really doesnt feel like a piston is moving more of just a consistant smooth light resistance..Any ideas? What should i do next? Could it be seized? is the kickstarter not engaging?  Any idea please help.  Thanks a million (p.s im brand new to this)

Does the motor make funkfunk sound out of the pipes when you kick it?

Pull a plug and see if the pistons are going up and down when you use the kick.
 
 The clutch could be stuck open and not allowing the kick to transfer to the crank. On the left side of the engine there is a small chrome cover, pry it off and underneath is the clutch adjustement, Back the inner screw out and then in 1/4 turn (or just leave it backed out) this should release a stuck clutch (unless it is corroded open).

 Or pull the complete left side cover(remove footpeg and shifter- or just remove the "Yamaha" cover-2 bolts) and put a wrench/socket on the crankshaft nut and see if it will turn over the engine.

Here is a diagram of the kick starter shaft.  It is orientated so that the kick lever is mounted at the left.  Part number 5 (kick clip) has the finger that sticks out and fits into a notch in the case.  Everything  but 10 mounts up to the right of the groove in the middle of the shaft held in place by 11 the circlip.   Possible that something is broken or loose not allowing the gear to engage?  Never had mine apart so that's about all I can offer.
