What's the difference between SOHC and DOHC?
« on: October 29, 2009, 10:33:36 AM »
Cousins:

I just bought a '79 CB750LE with the DOHC, and as I poke around the forums, see that the SOHC's have a great following.  What's the bugaboo with the DOHC's?

What is bugaboo?

The dohc is a completely different bike.
Very (VERY) few parts are shared.

DOHC is a completely different engine.

There are two cams, one above the exhaust valves, and one above the intake valves.
No.

The DooHocs are better in a lot of ways, more modern, more power.  Negatives: a little more top heavy. They just never developed the "mystique" that the Sohocs have.

If you're starting shopping from a blank slate, it would be easy to choose the Doohoc. But if you have history with the brand or the model, it would be very difficult to switch from Sohoc to Doohoc.

Its a feeling.

..............they saw cylinder in half if maintainance isnt done properly and regularly, the ignition units fail on  a regular basis.(generally overheat because ignition was left on and coil draws about 4 amps through it)

PJ
They are a good motor but it really isnt as tolerant of abuse as the SOHC

I almost bought a dohc this summer, it needed more work than I was willing to put into it though. Good thing too because I would currently have three project bikes right now had I bought it, a little excessive.

As everybody has said here, they're more modern with more power and whatnot but lack some reliability and durability because there are more moving parts to break that may or may not have been designed a little hastily.

I have both.Your dohc is one of the first that Honda made since it is a 79.It was Hondas answer to winning track races.Very Fast.It does not hit cruising speed until 7000- 9000 RPM.The draw back is parts. They can be found but few and far between for good ones unless you spend some serious cash.If the rectifier has not been replaced yet ,it will be before long.{biggest problem}.Here is the site you want for all your questions on parts and maintenance.Just some good guys that know all about dohc.

I had both a 750 SOHC and a 750 DOHC at the same time ! I couldn't ' warm' to the DOHC at all. Didn't like the seat/riding position with stock or straight bars. Frontend felt too squirrely and light and it weaved ( new tires ) at 75mph +, 80-85 darn scary...! Just made of lighter metal and the cams were well known to be 'soft', 10K on the motor and it vibrated x2 compared to my 32K miles SOHC... sold it and bought two 750 SOHC'S......!!
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

I have an 81 DOHC 750 that I got for my son to ride when he is home on leave from the Navy.I have added superbike bars, narrowed the seat, painted, and added new tires. It rides and handles good to me but I am not that fast anyway ,It is a good bike but I am going to sell it because I have bought a SOHC 750 to build a Cafe for him. There is just something about the SOHC.

Cousins:  Thanks for all the replies.  Seems the DOHC requires a little more maintenance , but I'm a pretty good wrench and aren't afraid of anything. Appreciate the links!  I may start looking for a SOHC to play with as well...  Thanks!
