Decipher Brad Pitt's bike
« on: October 30, 2009, 09:54:56 AM »
Look at the first few seconds of this vid. How is his bike configured? Looks like a suicide shift but where's his clutch? He has his left foot down when stopped.

Looks like his clutch is RH and he's throwing the shifter behind his foot.
Looks like a nightmare to ride on the street, I saw on TMZ when he clipped a mirror on a car and put it down.

That makes some sense. So I'd guess his braking would have to be linked. Looks like such a cool ride. def takes some skill to drive though.

Not sure how you missed it, but his left foot went to pedal just as he went into gear.  What I want to know is who designs a bike with low bars and pegs way out front?  You almost have to bend in half just to ride it.

Now that you point that out Stan, I guess the clutch is at his foot, so I guess the brake is RH.

Funky.

Most early american bikes had the foot clutch with the shifter on the tank. You controlled the ignition advance with the left grip, throttle on the right(duh)... And the earlier models had a manual oil pump... as you were going down the road you would push a little button on the tank(one half gas, other half oil) to pump the oil in. The first Knuckleheads didnt have valve covers and would spray oil all over your pants going down the road!!!

And riding like that is ridiculously unsettling. You feel like you have zero control. Thats why I like my inline fours, they're made to ride not just to look cool! That being said, I think that was a zero engineering bike. If I HAD TO have a custom HD, they'd be building it. They started restoring old 45in flatheads and hoppin them up. Look em up, they do some cool stuff!

the indians had a left hand throttle on the models that had the shifter on the left side of the tank i believe

I think the bike was built by Exile Choppers and they offer
an internal left side (or right side) twist grip clutch--$500 in 2005.

Somewhere in the back of my head, I have a memory that there are foot clutches where you push them down and they lock open (so that you can put your feet down at stops), and then to release it you push down again and then let off against spring pressure to engage the clutch.  For shifts while moving you don't push it down far enough to lock it open.

My 48 Indian Chief is that way. Left grip twists for spark advance, right grip is throttle, shifter on the left side of the tank and the clutch has to be manual disengaged AND engaged with a tilt back and forth foot control.

That is how stock foot clutches work, they usually overcenter.. a lot of custom ones do not...hence the name... Suicide Clutch..

The foot clutch on my '48 Chief locks out
but a few times sitting at an intersection,
with the bike shaking a bit, the clutch has automatically
"engaged itself" putting me right out in the intersection.
I now put it in neutral at a stop light.

Hey guys. I just now saw his foot go to his clutch lever so he was just in neutral at the stop.

Btw, I found the guy who created this bike. His name is Shinya Kimura and his shop is Chabott Engineering over in Azusa. Google this dude, his bikes are SICK! It's as if Soichiro Honda and Jules Verne got drunk and started a bike shop. Maybe I should modify my build to half cafe, half samurai chopper?

Yep, it's a Shinya bike.  He runs Chabott now, but he used to run Zero Engineering.  Zero only did Shovel and earlier Harley customs (restored engines), but he's spread out at Chabott.  Very cool stuff, but (as Mr. Pitt will tell us) not easy to ride.

Zero is making production bikes now, with S&S Evos.  No jockey shifters on those.
One day, I will put up a signature.

I guess this is the bike he dropped recently and was filmed by some paparazzi, you may probably have seen it in the net.

My Ural has a 'Dnepr-Glide' gearbox. There's a conventional handlebar operated clutch lever but as you activate the gear lever a rod emerges from the rear of the gearbox and pushes on the clutch operating arm. I've no idea why they designed it like that but at least it means I never have to worry about snapping a clutch cable.
