cb750 Cafe Rebuild - cb750 1976 F
« on: December 02, 2010, 10:21:43 AM »
Good morning.  I need some advice. I have a Super Sport that I bought 5 years ago for $425.  As you can imagine it didn't run or roll.  Now it can easily do 95 mph, but it isn't too pretty.  Through this process I came understand the beast and now I want to make it pretty.

To date I have freshed (new seals) the motor, worked on the electrical and tons of little stuff.  My skills set is pretty good “now” but is "hand tool" based.  So I'm not able to weld the frame or tank.

My goal is to take the bike apart and powder coat everything!  Frame / forks / engine covers / rims.

So I have a few questions

- recommendations on a cheap home powder coating system?
- should I try to find new rims/wheels as opposed to rebuilding and powder coating the originals (heard about Harley wheels)
- Old school fairings (full / half or bikini)?
- solo seat?
- change from pts to upgraded ignition system? type / cost ?
- When the engine is out (port and polish the heads? – if so --  HOW?)  It is Currently stock.  When I freshened it I didn’t do any valve work.  It does not burn oil and when it was apart it looked good.  However, it is 35 yrs old and has 47K on the clock.
- No interest in an 836 upgrade or anything too radical.

This is not my only bike so I want to take my time and do it right.  The end goal is a GA to FL Key’s ride in Oct 2011.

Any help is more than appreciated!!!!!!  :)

Hey there,
I make a whole sandblasting/powder coating setup for under 200 bucks. Its primarily harbor freight products and stuff from around the basement! you can see some samples on my build page below. I can also give you more details if your interested.

I got a solo seat from cb750 cafe.com, as it was the only one I could find that used the existing hinges. (i havent installed it yet, but some people said the lock might not line up..)
Ive been tempted to get the pamco ignition from cb750supply.com, its cheap.

Hi Congrats on your project. I myself am doing the exact same project a 1976 CB750F. I will post a picture to give you a boost. Mine hasnt been run in 26 years. Im thinking of calling her Holy Moly!
You may want to check Harbor Freight I was reading just yesterday on the threads here that they have a $50.00 kit and you can buy the powder on Ebay. It seems people are really happy with the results.

I myself am going to take the plunge and do my own paint but having somone powder coat the frame and rims for me.

Carpy has some pretty decent looking rear sets but they are not cheap, nearly $500. I would look around you may be able to get some for $350-$400.

Carpys are here:

check out fast from the past for rear sets.  Way better prices than Carpy.

During my project I would like to "plug" the chain lube system on my bike. None of my other bikes have this and it just makes the entire rear end look like poop.  oil and grease everywhere after a few thousand miles.  Has anyone done this?  JB Weld?
