forum newbie here 78' CB750F brakes
« on: September 27, 2011, 11:34:40 am »
my front brakes were dragging and then the master cylinder locked up.  In dissassembling the master cylinder, the rubber boot disintegrated and opening it up, I found the stop plate washer badly corroded.  The piston was a little stuck but came out with pliers.  the Spring isn't pulling out.  I'd like to clean it all up and re-assemble but have nothing for the boot.  The only source I'm finding is from honda a rebuild kit for about $50 (K&L doesn't list it).  my other options are to buy an aftermarket master cylinder for about $50, or a used assembly off ebay (may well look like mine).  Any ideas?

Keep checking for parts suppliers.  Cyclerecycle2 out of indianapolis has master cylinder kits reasonable.  They have a web site or you can call in.  Welcome.

Don't forget to clean out your weep back hole inside the master cylinder and believe it or not I have used spark plug boots for the banjo fitting cover but I am sure you were talking about the dust boot on the plunger

It could just as easily be the caliper that is causing the brakes to drag.  Dirt and brake dust get in around the pad and cause it to hang up or the seal looses it's elasticity causing the same thing.  Better to do them both at the same time.

thanks everyone.  cool site we have here.  yes, I was talking about the master cylinder piston boot but I like that idea for the banjo bolt boot!  and thanks on the weepback hole (I use guitar strings for carbs and these..). and i did isolate to the master cycinder by breaking the bleeder screws and ultimately breaking the line off the splitter.  but my calipers are on the edge too with some corrosion on the pistons from sitting.  I'm not one to fix what ain't broke though.  I cleaned up the piston on the caliper that was dragging and I'll probably do both calipers in the early spring if one needs it.
