1975 CB550 K1 Need some ring gap guidance please...
« on: December 31, 2009, 07:08:15 AM »
My pistons are all cleaned up, my bore has been deglazed with a dingleberry hone and im ready to install a fresh set of Honda standard-size rings.  I have a few nagging questions though and Im hoping someone can clear some of this stuff up for me...

1.  What is the minimum ring gap tolerance I should be looking for on a stock 550?  The clymer manual talks about max ring tolerance only.  I found some useful info at the link below but im not sure if it just applys to 750's:    http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=60679.0

2.  The other thing im wondering is how exactly I should be measuring the ring gap...
        a.  Do I measure in the top of the bore or bottom or both?
        b.  Do I use one set of rings or should I measure all four sets in their own cylinder?
        c.  When measuring the 3-piece oil ring do I measure it altogether or just the rails?
        d.  The 3-piece oil ring has no markings, does it matter which rail goes on top/faces up?

I apologize for the mega-post but these questions have been consuming my thought for some time and im having trouble finding the info I need.  TIA!

the procedure is spelled out in the service manual.
one is available from here:  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=17788.0
