OOOPS! I did it again................. (another new bike)
« on: November 01, 2009, 05:15:18 PM »
Well here's another "impulse buy". After buying a "new" Triumph Rocket III from my brother in August I had no intention of buying any more bikes for quite awhile, but once again, fate stepped in................

A friend alerted me to the fact that a guy had a couple of bikes (A BMW R75/6 and the 1973 Laverda 750 SF1) for sale on the Defence Intranet "Classified Ads" going cheap (my favourite word) so I took a look, and was blown away by both bikes, they were in brilliant condition, both engines had been rebuilt by well known engine builders, and both had been taken off the road many years ago, so although neither bike was in "going condition", hadn't done much work, and shouldn't need much either.

I rang the seller right away, the BMW was sold, and he'd had a couple of inquiries about the Laverda, but it was still for sale. My A.D.D took over, and I bought it over the phone, on the spot. On Saturday I drove to pick it up from the sellers home in Canberra and drove home again, a distance of almost exactly 800 miles, in one marathon 14 hour drive. Thank God for bottled water and junk food...............

I don't own a bike trailer so I hired a purpose built enclosed "walk in" trailer with a ramp/tailgate, which I initially thought would be a great idea as it'd protect my "mint" Laverda from stone damage, rain, hail, snow, you get the picture. As it turned out, I wish I'd just hired a "non enclosed" light trailer, this big heavy windsock on wheels put a lot of strain on my son's car's (my old car, I don't have a tow bar on my company car) newly rebuilt transmission and cooling system, and reduced the fuel economy to almost zip, my first tankfull got me less than 200 miles down the road, or approximately HALF as far as a tank will take me normally! All up, to do 800 miles, I used 70 US gallons of gas, and being quite a warm day (around 80 degrees) the temp gauge never got lower than halfway! Never, never, again.............

I had a doctors appointment first up on Saturday so didn't leave until around 1045am, and I'd told the seller, Colin, that I'd collect the bike around 6pm, and amazingly, I arrived at his place at exactly 6pm. Colin had gathered up all of his doumentation, so I've now got the original owners manual, workshop manual, parts manual, last registration decal etc. Colin (in pic, on bike) really didn't want to sell, but his marriage had collapsed, and as is usual in this situation, he has to sell all his stuff and give her half, which sucks.

After I got home and had a few hours sleep I returned the trailer and refueled and washed my sons car, then got stuck into getting the "Beast from Braganza" running again. I bought a new battery which I didn't use because it didn't fit the tray (5mm too wide) then found that the battery in my riding mower was perfect, so "borrowed" that one, dumped the oil out and cleaned the filter (wire mesh) and refilled it with 3 litres of new Penrite HPR30, cleaned the plugs, tore the carbs apart (Dellorto 36mm "pumpers") and cleaned a couple of mm of green mud out of them, (Colin had removed and emptied the tank, but didn't think to drain the fuel out, all those years ago) then cleaned the jets and carbs idle circuit etc, took off the cam inspection covers and sprayed some oil over the rockers and valves, springs etc, sprayed some oil and WD 40 into the spark plug holes and turned everything over with the starter to make sure it wasn't gonna be running dry until the oil was pumped up to the top end, then inserted the key, hit the button, and was rewarded by a throaty "Bah-room-A" from the Staintune "Conti Replica" pipes, woohoo!

Today I'm gonna take it for a ride and get a "roadworthy certificate" so that I can register it, so in a few days, it'll be road legal. Here's a pic of the new beasty with Colin sitting on it, I'll take some more pics as time goes by, I'm sure. Oh, and if you look closely at the engine, you might notice more than a passing resemblance to Honda's early twins from the 1960's. Supposedly Mr Laverda was so impressed with these little twins he used a similar design for his 650, then 750 engines, which is kinda nice that it ties in with my other bikes. I hope you guys like it! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Ha ha, very nice Bill, I love that old American iron, I'd buy one but I couldn't afford to run it, at the moment when I'm not driving my company car I'm driving my wife's old Hyundai, and it gets better fuel mileage than my 750/4! Have you got your CBX yet? Now that's a bike! Cheers, Terry. ;D

They're both beautiful Bill, I nearly bought one of those GPZ's new in 1987, they were an awesome machine, but I went in a different direction and bought a 1984 Harley Sportster, (I wish I still had that bike.............) you're starting to build up one heck of a nice collection Bill, well done! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Thanks Terry. I think so too, but I'm a bit prejudiced! ::)

Yeah, both the CBX AND the GPZ are something to ride, but each is different in it's own way. 8)

You know, I have 3 vehicles with names that consist of LETTERS. CBX, GPZ AND GTX! ::) Maybe I need a ZR1 and a GTR and what ever others there are. ;D Actually, I'd better lay off of getting anything else and spend some time working with the Super Hawk and then, there's the Jawa 250.

Here's the Super Hawk in the start of a Mock-up:

Very nice find, Terry. We used to call them tractors, but that was due to ignorance years later I rode one from a friend and the thing I remember is the heavy clutch. But nice bottom power, tried to pursuede my girl, now my wife for more than 25 years, to buy a Laverde Jota 1000cc three cylinder, but she did not like the look of it, so again bought a Honda.

Have a nice ride.

Thanks guys, well I took "The Beast from Breganze" for it's Maiden Voyage yesterday, it started up right away, but wouldn't idle with the choke off. Oh well, no biggie, it was a bit tricky, but once underway it ran fine, and I only stalled it 15 or 20 times in my 45 minute ride, hell, by the time I got home I was so used to being abused by other drivers I was disappointed when I didn't cop a mouthfull from whomever it was that I stalled in front of!

The gearshift pedal is on the right side, where every one else conveniently locates the brake pedal. My first experience with this was when I rolled out of my driveway straight in front of a moving car as I madly stomped on the gearshift pedal, which not surprisingly, did little to retard (co-incidentally what the driver yelled at me as she swerved around me........) my progress. This situation reared it's ugly head on several occasions during my ride, 40 years of left hand side gear changes had made an indelible mark in my tiny brain, and I was struggling to teach myself that black is now white, up is down, and I'm an idiot...........

The PO, Colin, is only a little feller, probably 5'6" tall. I'm 6'4 with gorrilla-ishly long arms, but it was still a real stretch down to the beautiful "Jota" bars. I hate clipons, clubmans etc on road bikes, even with rearsets they are a handfull for normal riding, and it's just not natural to be riding around with your head jacknifed at 90 degrees to your torso. 18 hours on, my poor old neck still hurts, so I'll be swapping out those bars with some low rise European bars, which will be closer to the OEM 750SF bars, with my current "right is left, and left is right" confusion, I don't need to be in pain physically, as well as mentally...............

So apart from it's inability to idle, the goofy right hand side shifter and handlebars so low I can use my knees as armrests, how did it go? Actually, really good. The Staintune "Conti" pipes give it a glorious booming note, the engine has stacks of low down grunt, the gearshift (once remembered) is a smooth and well spaced as anything else from the era, including our Honda's, it has that typical italian "Running on Rails" feel in corners that inspires greater corner speeds, but only adds to my confusion when I have to suddenly slow down and forget which side the damn gears are on............

I'm still trying to get used to the brakes, the rear brake is better than a lot of discs, but the front TLS drum is pretty lousy. The cable is pretty stretched and there's not much adjustment left, but I'll sort it out, I'm sure. Apart from the stupid cafe racer riding position, it's really quite comfortable, the Ceriani forks and Marzocchi Strada rear shocks work great, but the right side fork seal has dried out and was weeping a tiny amount of fork oil, so I might dump out the oil and refill them both with ATF and see if that softens and swells the seal, or if not, I'll replace the seals.

That was my only oil leak, which is pretty impressive for a 36 year old bike that's been sitting unused, for many years. Colin told me that he'd done around 4000 miles since the restoration was completed, but I suspect that he might have "embellished" this story, he rebuilt the bike after buying it from a friend in several boxes, and there are still a couple of important parts missing, one was the front brake stay arm which makes the bike all but impossible to ride any distance at all, ( I made one but it wasn't easy, and as Colin has no workshop facilities he couldn't) it's also missing the tank strap, the battery strap etc, the tires are brand spanking new and all the little mold knobs are still intact not to mention that the idle screws on the carbs haven't been adjusted leads me to believe that he didn't ride it much, if at all. The oil that came out of the engine was almost new too, and the plugs had done no work, so I'm guessing that he didn't quite finish it, and rode his BMW instead.

Of course I could be wrong, but it wouldn't be the first time someone has sold off a project bike before they'd completely sorted it. Talking to him, he didn't appear to have a great mechanical knowledge, so I'm guessing that he put it together, took it for a short ride but was as confused as I am with the right side shift, couldn't get it to idle and didn't have a brake stay arm, so shelved it until he could get motivated again, but then his marriage collapsed, and he lost interest.

Anyway, all assumptions (correct or otherwise) aside, there's precious little that I need to do to make it a really enjoyable ride, I'll swap the bars today, adjust the idle, change the fork oil, make a tank and battery strap up, adjust the brakes, and it should be good to go. Now if I can only retrain my pea-sized brain to remember that the shifter is on the right, life with a Laverda will be good! Cheers, Terry. ;D

No wonder Laverdas were called "Tractors". Laverda started life building tractors.

They are very much sought after. Congratulations on the purchase Terry. It just needs one more thing to be perfect:

Terry, dont want to throw water on your deal but DO NOT take it out on a hot day, cooling on the SF was marginal due to the small finning and piston siezures were common when they were about, You soon find out as they just wont start without a "bump". The handling is superb and the front brake ought to be good so I guess a sort out is in order. If you have problems with parts Slater Brithers (who persuaded Laverda to build and sell the Jota) are only a couple of hours from me so export would not be a problem---apart from postage cost!!!

Should it ever need a top end rebiuld/rebore we used to reckon at least 1,000 miles of careful running in was needed but boy was it fun riding one

Cool bike!  I was at a classic bike Rally several years ago and a guy had one of those parked in the grass.  After getting a good look at it (with the owner right there) the bike just falls over and put a big ole' dent in the tank, needless to say he was pissed.
I farted and made my son cry.

Thanks Raul, I thought about orange too, but it turns out they came out in several colors, including silver. I think I've located the original owner and have sent him an email (he's an Aussie Navy officer in Papua New Guinea) with some pics, so hopefully he'll be able to tell me if it was originally silver. If it is, I'll keep it that way, as it's probably "rarer" than the more common orange models. Cheers, Terry. ;D

G'Day Bryan, thanks for that offer mate, and it's good to know that the Slater brothers are still operating, I only just discovered that the Australian Laverda specialists, Jim Eade, have closed their doors, I used to ride past their shop every day back in the early 1980's when I was posted to Sydney, they'd been around for 50-odd years too, so it's sad that someone else couldn't have taken over when Jim's son retired.

The engine feels really good, although there seems to be a lot of tappet noise, moreso than my stock CB750K0, but about as much as my K1 with the hopped up 836cc engine and the Megacycle 125/75 cam, with the tappets set at 5 thou. From memory, the Laverda has pretty big clearances too, not that I've checked them yet. It was 33 degrees C on Monday (and wearing only a T shirt and jeans I've got the sunburn to prove it) and it ran fine apart from the idle problem previously mentioned, but I'll take your advice and either install an oil cooler, or just ride one of the other ten bikes in my garage on a hot day! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Hi Terry,

Just read about your recent aquisition and I have to congratulate you. Nice bike and not to many around in Oz. The guy that is the authority on Lav's in Oz is a guy called Red Crawte, he stocks a lot of spare parts and has several upgrade parts in stock.

A good source of info is the Wiki on this site
http://www.laverdapedia.com/

also technical info can be found here
http://www.laverdamania.com/

parts that Red does not have are best obtained here

G'Day Gerald, thanks very much for that mate, I really appreciate that information and I've just joined the Laverdapedia site, just like this site, it appears to be a great source of info and "camaraderie" from like-minded marque devotees.

Your bike looks beautiful, I almost bought a really nice silver 3CL in 1989, but the shop was pushing me to buy a "Jota" replica (the 3CL was being sold by the shop on behalf of another customer) and the "Jota" was a dog. Very rough condition with a welded up frame, bondo in the tank, ripped seat, oil leaks, blowing smoke,  just horrible. I ended up buying a 1979 Ducati 900SS, what a bloody nightmare that thing was! I sold it (in boxes) and bought a BMW K100RT, and never looked back.

My SF1 is a brilliant bike, I've got a couple of friends who are Laverda fans and one of them came to see it last weekend and he was blown away by how good it is, he's a pretty cynical bloke so I wasn't expecting too many compliments, but he was positively gushing about how good it is, he took it for a ride and told me that he liked it so much he didn't want to turn it around, and he had to force himself to bring it back, ha ha!

I'll check out those parts sources too mate, I need a couple of little things for it, Colin, the PO, built it from several boxes of parts, and there were a couple of smaller items missing that I'd like to find. Thanks again mate, like here, I'm "Terry in Australia" on the Laverdapedia site. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Hi Terry,

Good to know of another Honda Four enthusiast on the Laverda side. You'll find that the Lav folks like to bash the Hondas (in jest) and have a twisted sense of humor (like the folks on this site), so you're in good company ;D

Regards,
Gerald
