Topic: Is there a quicker throttle for the 550?

My only complaint with my 550K3 is the amount of twist the throttle needs from closed to fully open - more that I can manage in one movement so I almost have to let go and grab it again.

Is there any quick mod or kit out there that can give me a faster throttle. I would imagine a new slightly longer cable would be necessary if the diameter of the cable run is increased but I'm open to any ideas.

Or find a thottle tube with a larger diameter pulley wheel.  Might not be able to use the stock right hand control though (?).

 a larger pulley will not fit in the stock throttle housing IMHO

euro racing have the best solution, it has different pulley diameters so you can find what suits you best.

You'll have ot find another solution for the starter button anr lights control and its expensive too.

be warned, quicker throttle means also heavier effort to overcome spring tension.

Look in the FAQ under "Thoughts of Hondaman".  In his section for the 550 he describes how to modify the stock throttle sleeve for this exact purpose.

I had to do just a little bit of clearance-ing out of the housing for the cam to fit.

I was going to measure the amount of the twist before I put it in, but I forgot. It does twist a lot less now, though. It has about the same amount of twist as my Ducati does.

 I got a shorter turn throttle housing/tube from somewhere...but yeah you can't use the factory right switch assembly. I'm just using a single starter button though on that side...no need for the whole switch assembly....

Motion Pro maybe is where I got it?!

nice trick, used it too on my guzzis too, but if you want a REAL quick throttle,i.e. in the 90-100 degree to WOT range, you really need a much bigger pulley AND housing.

That will get your front tire in the air and make you think twice before calling the 750 "not a sportbike". 

When these types of 1/4 turn throttles appeared in the early 1970s for the 750 (with both cables, they are out there, somewhere...) we could not get enough of them. The local riders called them the "wheelie grip" throttles when they came in asking for them. We just drilled a new hole in the handlebars to accept the stock right switch about 3/4 inch further in, then added the new twistgrip on to the bar end. The front brake lever then seemed a bit of a reach, so we adjusted the levers back toward the bar. (The brake lever adjuster, BTW, disappeared on the K2 model, being replaced with a piece of bumper rubber, instead.  )

becasue its not a push-pull throttle, you dont want a pull only on a four pot bike for safety reasons.

That specific one is for a mini-bike. It will be undersized and not up to the job.  I have run single pull throttles on CB750 before. There is the school that cautions against for safety reasons, and they have their point. Then there are those....

And I was willing to sell at least 1 maybe 2 for $35US...

And for which i had no takers....

And now that the 200Euros has surfaced...

I won'r sell at all!

dont "worry", on my bike i use a cagiva-ducati throttle found in a swapmeet for 10$..... gave a very good rate with my 26 VM's but was too quick for the new 29 CR's, put back in there a stock 500 inner sleeve now.

did you have to glue the spacer on or is it just resting there? i'm going to try that on my k4, not so much for the fatser throttle but anything i can do to reduce the distance i have to turn the throttle to WFO is a good thing

well that's funny you say this.. i got questioned about doing this on the freeway last Thursday.  my buddy watched my creep all my fingers up the throttle slowly while accelerating. he said it was kinda creepy to see. and i do it so often i just don't notice it anymore.

  now I'm not one to race my 550, but man it almost kills my wrist not moving my hand up on the throttle on long rides

i hear ya. i bought what i call football grips (thicker in the middle) in part to save my nancy boy wrist from unspeakable pain. a quicker throttle would also be dandy.

Disco Volante have some cheaper throttles too with push pull - some bery nice gear on their site. I love that Takura throttle though - it's like silk, well worth raiding the wife's purse for some of those crinkly bits of paper for
