Oil temperature and fitting a sensor....
« on: November 02, 2009, 01:27:47 AM »
Hi

i have bought one of these vapor gauges ( http://trailtech.net/vapor.html ) , and it comes with a temperature sensor that is supposed to be fitted inside a radiator pipe.

Now i toyed with the idea of filling it in the oil pipe, but the distance to clock was too long (For the cable).
I also thought about one of the can adjustment caps, but the temp probe was too long and would come in contact with the adjuster.
As i had another tappet cover,as well as the square/triangular plate that goes on top (i don't know what you call it, but kinda like a splash plate with an oil overflow, right at the top of the tappet cover?).

I drilled into this and fitted the probe reckoning the oil would be getting to it, and it would allow me to get a approximation of running temps etc.

Whadda you guys think?
Crummy idea?
What temp should i be expecting to get from the engine oil?
Is there someplace ele you would have put it?

Thanks
Thor

It would help if we knew what bike you have, and a pic of the probe or better yet, a drawing with the dimensions of the probe would be a great help in determining where it might fit.  I was thinking that if you have room, (at least on the 750 engine) try seeing if you could modify the oil galley plug where most people mount a pressure gauge to accept the probe.  There are probably several places that thing could be fitted once we have an idea of the physical size of the probe.

I was able to drill and tap for a sender in the plug on the bottom just in front of the neutral switch. Dan

Sorry, Cb750k2.  :)
I placed the probe here

I don't have the actual pics, as I'm at work, so i goggled this(apologies if the owner of this pic is from here) :), then photo shop.
The blue is the cover and green the probe. The probe is quite small and touches nothing.

What kinda temps can i expect out of the oil/should i be expecting?
Hotter than water in a water cooled item?
Any advice/suggestions?
Cheers

it wont be submerged in oil there, just a splash of oil on it.

Mine replaces the oil pan drain bolt. That position you have shown is too high as was mentioned

Mike, Mine reads fine and I was worried about the drain bolt as I felt it was too venerable to being busted off and leaking oil on the rear tire. Dan

It looks like you have a mechanical type....mine is electronic. Yours should read right...it's in the correct place. ;)
