custom pod/airbox idea
« on: July 22, 2009, 02:20:44 AM »
Can anyone tell me if this idea is a good one? or are there issues i may have that i havent thought about ???

My idea is to take a gsx 750/1100 K&N filter like this one and sandwich it between two alloy plates,  the backing plate will of course have my carb rubbers inserted in them in the same fashion as my airbox, so that what i end up with is a one piece pod filter that with a bit of tooling on the outer alloy plate (cut fins into it) should look pretty trick , does anyone foresee any problems?

This is a great idea!
You could uses aluminum plates to save weight.
You would have to cut the original "stacks" to fit the lower profile of the new filter.
There may also be some automotive filters of similar shape that would work as well but give more depth.
Let us know how it goes :)

Aside from simple clearance issues (which I'm guessing you've measured this out) I can't see why it wouldn't work, and probably work very well!

You will have carb tuning issues that may or maynot be different than one encounters when using pods.

There is no dead air space, as in the stock air box, as the air is going by the filter & the carbs have to suck the air, they don't get any help from the design of the airbox.

It may look cool for looks, but not necessarily improve performance.

Goon has made something similar to your idea, utilizing the stock filter replacement and the upper half of the box. The issue that I ran into is that the old boots are often too weak to hold up the weight of the filter with the plates UNLESS you use the stock mounts for the airbox and or fabricate something to use them. It does look nicer, and ran better than with pods.
He made his out of like plexiglass or acrylic or something. It's a neat setup.

It wouldnt be tough to fab up a little hanger from the backbone of the frame to the carbs to help support the weight. It'd also be hidden under the tank.

I was working on a similar design a year and a half ago or so.
No.

Only issue I can see is for the PD carbs and the choke lever hitting the filter. Just make the mounts long enough and you should be cool.

Nice idea.

Don't cut down the airbox rubbers, the flare at the end helps smooth the airflow into the carb throats.

Wouldn't you essentially be building one of these?

I took the approach of using the stock air filter frame and gluing in a piece of K&N filter media from a Harley filter.  If you put the stock filter into a fire all the paper elements and glue burn off.  Here is a picture of one I made.

mlinder shows what I had in mind with having a deeper filter.
A bracket would be required but is an easy fab.

yep thats exactly the look im after, and i figure there shouldn't be any tuning problems if other bikes run them, I'll have a go at it and put the pics up in my build thread, thanks fellas.

Actually if you have room to sandwich two of those filters together you will improve the air flow to the carbs as you have doubled the amount of filtered air.

That's an old stock car trick.

Except you would have to cut the end open!

Might wok good if you tranfered the holes for your stack tubes, into that rubber end of the aircleaner.

I was thinking about removing the bottom of my air box, I have a K&N, & making an aluminum plate to fit to the screw fittings. Might try it. On my brothers bobber 550 we are trying to come up with a design that can run a HD style cone filter on the side. Maybe run a round tube with boots to hook to the carbs & put a bend in it out the side for the filter. Havent got much further yet though. Will post pics if & when we do it.
