Are new Employers meaner?
« on: November 03, 2009, 08:27:15 PM »
Seems to me most propective employers lately are rude, inconsiderate and just plain
jerks lately.
Could be just me, but ....

The more people there are looking for jobs, the less accomodating prospective employers have to be, and sadly some of them take full advantage of that fact.  I'm sorry you're having to deal with that.

I just read about this in a HR Journal. The answer is yes and they will pay for it in due time. Upwards of 80% of the people surveyed said when things open up they are leaving. Right now they feel like wage and benefit slaves and they are pissed.
And it is not just new companies, the Company I retired from was extremely good to people, they went from great to mean.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

The pains of capitalism, when times get bad, so do companies.

Just wait 'till the market gets better though...

Seems to me they always have been, but maybe I have been unlucky? I DO remember waaaay back when the shoe was on the other foot;plenty of jobs and not enough skilled workers. Now the attitude is "you should be grateful you even have a job!"

+ 1 for sure!!! The other guy I work with has been at our shop for like 15 years (I've been there almost 3) and he tells me things about our boss that I didn't really pay attention to until lately. I have had to deal with losing a good chunk of pay (going from hourly to flat-rate pay),loss of health care about 6 months ago, laying off other workers and kinda half-ass expect us to do things we don't get paid to do.It's like you say...............It seems his attitude is that we should be lucky to be working knowing that it will be hard for us to find better places to work at this time. When(IF) things turn around......I hope he can find people to replace us that can do a good job for him because we will be gone!!!

Bad everywhere. I work as a welder / fitter in Ontario Canada. Last year our shop was begging for guys. Now half of them are laid off and the rest of us are told "there are 100's of people waiting to replace you right now. Funny how their attitude changes quickly. Its still not getting much better as we are often working a three or four day week. One thing i do like is the amount of white shirts that they have removed. I think most company's are getting lean as they can right now. I have friends in the office at work that claim the company is turning a bigger profit now that half of the guys & overhead are gone. It does not seem to matter if you have given 20 plus years of your life to a company , if you are not as fast/good as the young guy who only has 2 weeks vacation & makes less $$ , you are gone !

they really CAN pick and choose too. after getting my last denial for ssi disability i figured i had NO choice but try to work as long as an employer would put up with my un-excused absences and other crap that keeps me from keeping a steady job. i was told, to my face they wouldnt hire me because i was "too white" WTF? too white?!?!?!?
