'72 CB450...tuning and exhaust help
« on: November 04, 2009, 06:02:18 PM »
I just picked up a '72 CB450 for $500 two nights ago on the Craig.  It has 4,700 miles and is 100% original from what I can tell.  It's very clean and has been garage kept its whole life.  It runs ok but I do need to go through the carbs and check the timing to make it run great, I believe.

I love the look of this bike!  I've ridden it up and down the driveway a few times and it just feels awesome.

However the breathing seems pretty restrictive, know what I mean?

I don't really want to change the stock look of the bike because i really like it.  I just want it to sound a little meaner, not scream, and breath a little better.

I think by putting a Uni filter in place of the stock paper filters would help.  Is there anyway to open up the stock exhaust a bit as well?  Or maybe a company that sells mufflers for these 450's that look close to the originals but sound a little meaner and allow the engine to breath better?

Would I need to rejet (mains? pilots? or what?)  after putting Uni filters in the stock airbox and opening up the exhaust?  I'm in Virginia 600 ft above sea level.

Thanks in advance for the help!  I've only had this bike two days but man, i really like this 450....even more than my 550.   I think I'm a twin guy and that's just the way it is.

I'll have to take a few pics so you guys can see it too.

.a slow bike that runs great is a lot less frustrating than a fast one that doesn't.

By the way, I just did a compression test this morning using my Penske comp tester.  The left cylinder read 172 and the right cylinder read 165.  I believe this is within spec...what do you guys think?

Uni "sock" filters work great.
As for mufflers, Emgo makes a "RoadHawk" muffler that has a good sound when you get on the throttle, but are fairly quiet when you putt around. They're about $50 or so each.
They also make a Dunstall replica that's pretty loud, about the same price.

You probably won't have to fool with the jets at all - 450's are very forgiving of these type of changes, as long as you don't get too radical and put on straight pipes or something.....
