Can't say what's best for you Bucky but I can at least give you my own experiences. Points are good, they are simple to use and set up but they do need maintenace. Optical igntion I couldn't get reliable ever. It would give me misfires at high revs and would just plain play up on sunny race days - I suspect that was down to some reflection or other off my shiny engine but who knows!

After a disasterous day at the track one week I took the optical off, bolted the Boyer magnetic ignition on and went back the following week, same track and had totally faultless performance. I never adjusted it for the following four years I owned the bike and was so impressed put the same ignition on the next race bike which I was building at the time. I since converted that to magnetic rotor self generating ignition - again, faultless.

My mind is made up and I'd go magnetic, points optical in that order of preference always now and I guess that's why I only ever have magnetic rotors because they work so well.

Well I think cyclex has an optical system. I think a couple here have bought it but I have not heard about the performance, though Ken says it is pretty good.

until this dyna s i have in it now craps out (they seem to last about a year or so for me) i'll be making the change, likely to the good, oem honda points and a HondaMan ignition box. until then, can i use the stock coils with the dyna s?

Yes, you can.

I'm getting a feeling of deja vu here. ;)

Well I think cyclex has an optical system. I think a couple here have bought it but I have not heard about the performance, though Ken says it is pretty good.
I've got it, I like it, it smoothed out the idle and I can idle lower than before, I haven't had any misfires. I haven't run it long though, so I can't say how it holds up long term.

I did have an issue with coil mounting, the coil is not similar to the stocker and a little hard to mount. Ken shows a bke with the coil mounted under the sidecover, to me tht is too far away to mount it.  I (and others) have mounted them where the stock coil is, with the plug connector facing either front or rear. Do not mount it to the side, mine rubbed on the gas tank and possible shorted out.

One good thing about the Cycle X system is that it has 4 timing curves, with a few switches you can select what you want.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.
