1974 kawasaki F11 making funny noise
« on: September 22, 2011, 02:29:13 PM »
i just got this bike. rode it one day to work and on my way home it started making this noise. its like a ticking noise. so i replaced the piston rings, wristpin bearing, head and base gasket. honed the cylinder a bit. it has a over sized piston (050) . there didnt seem to be any play in the connecting rod. here is the video. what do you think it could be?

just normal piston slap. i had one of those i 'cafe'd' out afew yrs ago. id reccomend anew piston, they are dirt cheap on ebay. the skirt probably collapsed a bit. thats actually kinda normal over time if its been ridden hard. did you check the ring end gap, etc?

I was thinking it could be piston slap also or maybe the crank bearings. No I. Just replaced the rings from eBay. Can I just replace with another 050 oversized piston or do I have to rebore? The way everything was still clean inside I don't think it was replaced that long ago. The piston didn't seem to move much in the cylinder either. But it started making that noise while. I was riding it home from work, about 9 miles in a little traffic.

the bike runs great when it cold but after a mile or so it starts making a weird pinging noise and runs like crap and shuts off at idle. another forum thinks it could be the gas and premix i have in it

eh. i doubt it. more likely timing or ignition failure. are the points/condesor in good shape? did you time it? if it were fuel/mixture it would not run well at any point. alos, the spark plug cap? is it original? after it cools down it will restart again? sounds like electrical.

sound sliek the ign is failign when hot, flooding, then when it cools its okay till it gets hot and dies again. def check your components.
id replace the coil and condensor minimally. considering where the condensor is on that bike  :o, you can use an automotive one and mount it next to the coil.  ;D

its got 6300 on it. but i have a radioshack rectifier on it with the pink and yellow wires going into the ac inputs on it and i was thinking maybe that has something to do with the funny noise afgter it gets hot. that noise in the video is not that loud anymore. now its just mostly making the pinging noise and shuts off and pops after it gets hot

hm. thought you said it would have to cool off to restart. anyway, interesting. wish i could lay my hands on it. 5 mins in person is better than 20 pages of 'net wrenching for sure.
