I Have Prostate Cancer
« on: November 05, 2009, 02:55:40 PM »
I am not looking for sympathy, I just want all the men on here to understand how important it is to make sure that they have their PSA levels checked, and yes the dreaded finger exam.

My PSA was never very high, just high normal. On my regular checkup my Doctor said he felt something, so I went to a Urologist who is highly regarded and he did a ultrasound and the finger test. He said, come back in six months, "it feels OK, but I need to worry for you, it is my job."

Two weeks ago at the six month mark my Wife's badgered me so I went back. He did his ultrasound and the finger. He said next week we are doing a biopsy. Which they did an it was much easier than the crap you see on  the Internet.

Yesterday he called and said one sample showed some mildly aggressive cancer cells, so since he is on the Hospital Board I am scheduled for a Cat Scan and Bone Scan this Saturday which is not done on Saturdays I am told.

My message to you is do not wait no matter what your age. Once again I will most likely dodge the bullet. I think the Devil has bigger plans for me. I will know more on Wednesday.

Had I blown this off and waited another year for the followup exam, my outcome may be far different than it would be now.

Stay on top of it boys, and never take it lightly.
Dedicated to Sgt. Howard Bruckner 1950 - 1969. KIA LONG KHANH.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

oh #$%* man. how far along is it, did they say? i assume at your age you'll get it treated? my dad was diagnosed as being in the very early stages at 79 years old and he didnt get any kind of treatment as prostate cancer takes so long to kill you. you and your family will be in my prayers in the coming weeks Bobby.

People my age should get the colonoscopy done also. It's worth it for the peace of mind. Sometimes your insurance won't pay for it unless there are symptoms. Easily solved by having symptoms.

A friend of mine has just had this done.
So far so good which is a positive.
Through regular monitoring it was picked up early and dealt with.
They did keyhole surgery and he was in and out of hospital the same day.
Feeling a little delicate after the surgery but he is going great.

I'm glad that you were getting your check-ups and that it seems to have been found fairly early.  This bodes well for you.  My Dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer about three years ago, but they found it early on, so he had it removed and is doing fine.

Bobby, I know you said you weren't looking for sympathy, but it's coming anyway. ;)
Buddy, my Prayers are coming right along with the others. I enjoy the replies you make AND get alot out of what you post as well. On my Dad's deal, YOU are the one who clued me in that I needed a "Durable" Power of Attorney AND the "Health Care Proxy (also known as a Health Care Power Of Attorney). Good of you to use this to put the word out to guys to keep on top of those things too! Take care Bobby AND keep us posted, okay? ???

I'm pulling for you Bobby, and looking forward to hearing that minimal treatment will set you right.
It's got to be completely disorienting to hear a doctor tell you that you have cancer, but as you say, early diagnosis and treatment are key, and hopefully it'll end up being a bad memory in the distant future.
All my best brother!

Bobby,

Sorry to hear the news. Doesn't mean it's bad news though. Your positive attitude is going to make a major difference. Looking forward to hearing of your next round of tests. What has your PSA level been running? Made me go take a 2nd look at mine. Last year 1.2 and this year 1.1. Just had mine done a few weeks ago. Don't like the digital exam but I joke with the doc that we are now going steady  ;) I have recently seen something relating cholesterol to prostate. Could be something to it. Last year 197 and this year 165. I decided to drop from 168lb to 156lb to eliminate my midlife cholesterol deposit on my gut. Too lazy to exercise it off. Sure miss my beer. Seems to made a difference. In addition to totally agreeing with you about having the tests done, I'd like to warn the guys about their weight and cholesterol. You guys should grow up to be old geezers too!

Good advice Bobby.  That's what I did and they caught mine early and after the treatments its gone.  Been a year and a half now.  Haven't really had much in the way of symptoms or side effects.  Like Bobby says, stay on top of it and catch it early.

Out of curiosity, what do you all consider early?  How old are you guys that are / have been dealing with this?

My Dad has it, but he's 77.  He's not doing anything either because his doc says it goes so slow.

I'm 44, and I've always heard the 50 is the magic number...

I'm 58.  Catching it early is not waiting too long between checkups.  You're right, I think after 50 is when you're supposed to check it at least annually.
