Hey Bobby hope everything works out for you.

I also have prostate cancer, and will be going in, in the next coupla weeks to schedule surgery to take that sucker out.

Heck, at my age and after seeing my over 70 year old uncle go through it....I figure I can too.

I went the external beam Radiation route. The scanners were not as good then so they could not see how close to the edge it may have been.  Good luck to you and stay in touch.

Best of luck to you guys!
I went through it, had the full surgery, and recommend it 100%.
I had an infection (not related to the cancer issue) in the incision that lasted for 2 months, long after the rest of me had healed up: the lasting effects of that infection went on 2 years more.
But as far as the prostate surgery part went, it was great! I have full recovery.

I strongly recommend all guys get checked regularly, especially get a PSA number when you are young. That number will start to shift (up or down) later in life if troubles occur, so it's real good to have a baseline number in your 30s or so, first. That gives the docs some more vital info to work with to see if you have an issue. The earlier it is found, the better the chance of a minor "fix" for it later.

I got diagnosed 6 months ago, with the doc telling me the story of the turtle, rabbit and eagle.

He told me I was at the turtle stage, and that they didn't have the laser machine, but was due to get it in Nov, 2014.

Well, he recommended I wait, but left that decision with me. I have an appointment to go back sometime this month, and my decision is, have this efer taken out, whether they have the laser or not.

It's being done in a military hospital, so no referrals to local hospitals that may have it.

I cannot make a decision for you but I can tell you what I have learned over a 6 year period. One of the debates is about over treatment. With surgery you run a very high risk of incontinence and ED. Once you have that operation some of the changes will be with you all of you life and cannot be reversed.
In some cases of it is found very early and has low volume and low Gleason and probably has been growing there for years. People have a tendency to "want it out" and Doctors use that phrase to close the deal. If you waited for the Laser which leaves you intact and the Cancer dead, life could be better.

I would have a serious talk with your Doctor an get the facts as to what would happen if you waited. Most battles are won using good Intel and planning accordingly. Good luck.

I'm sorry I haven't been keeping up with a lot of the threads Bobby, and didn't realise that your cancer has come back? Best of luck mate, and to Budlite too, I don't like to get all morbid on motorcycle forums, but you're both in my thoughts. Cheers, Terry.
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Think nothing of it Mate. I did not mention it until 78K posted on the thread. I am lucky I had the Docs keeping a good eye on me over the past few years. Being a contrary Bastard and having had one false alarm early on where they pushed the panic button and just some antibiotics pushed the PSA to zero, I told them let's try it.

When it seemed that as not the case again. I got rid of the first guys and went down to Sloan  Kettering in NYC which is one of a handful of top Cancer Hospitals in the World. A lot of research comes out of there and I got their top researcher in Radiation therapies.

This warrior Doc is about 5' 2" and very matter of fact. He walked in with abut six Ducklings around him and told me what they had found on the scans and what he was going to do about it. Not cold but matter of fact.

The prognosis is excellent so we can be morbid on something else.  ;D

I hear you, Bobby: that's precisely what my doc was like, too. When I heard there was a "complete" method and a "partial" method, I told him I never do ANYTHING halfway, do it all. When they got the Gleason back, he actually squeezed me in on his day off because he thought it could be late: he got there in time, though! Life's been good, since. :)

Mark,

I am glad t hear it all worked out for you and from all accounts it worked out well. Very few guys I have met have had very good results with the Radical procedure, so you had a good Surgeon who could work around the nerves.

What seems to be emerging is less invasive procedures, like Laser, Cryo and Ultrasound that can be used like a lumpectomy for Breast Cancer. This is handy for people with other problems, or a very early case.

Yeah, it turned out that mine was right up against those nerves (I guess there are some 20 of them?) and a few had to go, just to be sure he got it all. Didn't seem to bother me in the end, though! :)

I'd recommend this guy to anyone in a similar situation, in a heartbeat. But, he is in Colorado.

I found this thread now and I cannot resist to write...
I checked my PSA last year and it looked really fine. I heard from a collegue that its important to check if the PSA level increase. Low value alone is not a guarantee.
My father had the bad kind of Prostate cancer and his father before him too.
My father passed away end of November last (2014)year 89 years old. Good life into the very end. He was a little bit extra tired the last month. He got the verdict from his doctor 2001 or maybe 2003. They did not operate, he got medicine that could keep the cancer down. I guees it was a hormone.

If I become 89 thats fine with me! We did not make any internal check after he passed away to verify if it was the Prostate or something else that ended his appearance here. They asked me and I let him go in piece

I have read about the positive effect of broccoli, freshly pressed as juice mixed with a little bit apple to make it drinkable and not that smelly.

Another thing that is more recent is the effect of hot chilli that can keep the bad prostate cancer away:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4805190.stm
http://www.naturalnews.com/026076_PSA_capsaicin_cancer.html
http://prostatecancerinfolink.net/2010/03/08/chili-pepper-product-slows-psa-doubling-time-in-prostate-cancer-patient/

This was good news for me and might be the explanation of my good PSA level last year (53 years old then). I really love HOT chillies such as Bhut Jolokia, Naga Morich, Trinidad Scorpion with all varities like Butch-T, Moruga and Carolina Reaper that is an USA variant now the hottest in the world.

I have them all as dried powder bought on Internet. My freezer has a box with mostly fresh fruits I have grown in my kitchen or garage with HPS400W lamp. Same kind of lamp as the weed growers use. I have plenty of different seeds.
I bought Trinidad Scorpion Moruga fresh plant at a local shop last week.
(Later versions of LED lamps are OK too, like Mars Hydro LED according to Internet sites when searching.)

The fresh hot chillies taste wonderful if pressing 1-2 fresh fruits (seeds removed) with a garlic press into a cup with 0.5-1dl Sour Cream.  :P :P No juice on fingers. Your skin will burn where touched. Especially "there". ::)
Take all meet from the fruit and stir it, a teaspoon ketchup will enhance the flavour. Perfect on hamburgers etc. It is now possible to feel the taste. Eating a small piece of 1 mm2 will burn a lot. But in the good way. A little bit more will send a nice warming feeling into the bloodstream and chest area, like a nice drug. ::)

I'm sitting here recovering from having my prostate taken out a few weeks ago.

Bud, there is no generic right or wrong thing. My Cancer is mine and yours is yours. In my case surgery was not advised since I pushed for what was special imaging. It showed that it looked like it was trying to push it's way out. Radiation seemed to be the best choice.....for me.

I was in remission for a few years and it came back, this time with a vengeance, but still contained. This time they treated me with anti hormones to weaken it. Then I went through a  procedure where they knocked me out for a couple of hours, put me in and out of an MRI and inserted tubes right into the Cancer and around it.  Twice they sent powerful Iridium seeds through the tubes and into the gland.
Special software planned the spots the tubes were placed and how long each seed stayed in each spot. The seeds were welded to SS wire and a machine attached to the computers sent the wires and seeds down the tubes.

Each procedure took 20 minutes with six hours between treatments. Start to finish I was tied down to a special table for 16 hours.

I am lucky that I live close enough to Memorial Sloan Kettering which is one of the top Hospitals for Cancer and Cancer Research in the World. I was lucky the top man and researcher in this type of treatment agreed to see me. I am sure I fit into some research they are doing.

Considering his International reputation, he was one of the nicest Doctors I have ever met. He was there with me from start to finish, and he had his underling Doctors checking on me every 1/2 hour. During each procedure he supervised and checked the set up. At the end he supervised the removal of the tubes and made sure all was well.

My PSA was never very high both times. It never went higher than 4.5. The biopsy showed Gleason score 9s and 10s the second time.  Now my PSA is 0.05  with the drugs. In Sept we stop the drugs and wait.

That is what Cancer survivors do, we wait. We live our lives in those chunks of time between tests.

We will make it Brother. People think the Babe Thread accounts for that number. It does not. If I post 30 pics, it is one post.
Now if you can find discount Lupron that would really help. Every 30 days I get a shot at $3K a piece. $300 of that is out of my pocket. This Doc only does the 30 day shot since some people metabolize the 3 month quicker than others.

Bobby sorry for your problem but when you said that you live between tests that struck a chord, I think because we all live longer nowdays, we hit a point in our lives where everyone lives between tests I know I'm usually waiting for results to come in which reminds me I'd better phone my doctor. Any how good luck.

Thanks Bill,

It will be OK. It is not the first thing that tried to kill me. So far I have been lucky and I am sure the Devil is not ready for me yet.

I'm sitting here recovering from having my prostate taken out a few weeks ago.

Hope I did the right thing.

Bud: I wish you all the best! It was absolutely right for me, and I would do it again, given the same choices.
Heck, I'd be dead by now if I hadn't, and all these 750s at my house would be homeless!
