Bobby, thank you for the update.  There is no doubt in my mind that you are a remarkable man.  A life worth living is faced with challenges throughout.  How we face those challenges defines us.  You have shared something here that most people would want to hold pretty tight and you've done it with humor and grace.  You've also educated yourself and us along the way.  I especially appreciate that you were willing to help other people from this experience.  Now, as Jerry said, go get your license.

Bobby, simple word can not express what I am feeling, now that I know you are okay and can move on. It is clearly an excellent example of how things CAN turn out, when dealing with cancer and I am so proud for YOU! 8)  ;)

Today is THE day. First day of your new life. WELCOME BACK! Enjoy the new beginning. Kinda reminds me of awakening after the head on collision on my bike and realizing I had another chance at being better in life.

Sory to hear.

My dad jsut found out last week the same thing.  Monday he went udner the knife and they cut out the lump they found.  Not POSITIVE it is cancerous yet, but the doctor said there is onyl a slight chance it isn't cancerous.  He is 77 and rides his 883 sporty REGULARLY.  It's kind of got me rattled.

I also got a PSA screening 2 days ago.  I am 41, and the doctor said because of my dad's condition, they will start watching it from now on.

Need to get a colon check too.

Graduation day has arrived and they allowed me to take a couple of pics.

This is the Varian Rapidarc Machine. The two wings on the side deploy and do a quick low power xray, it also has a CT scanner built in. These are used to assure the position of the gland. The table then moves to to get you into the exact position down to the 1mm level before the beams are turned on. The Prostate can move 1/2" up or down at any given time. The room is called the vault, and is sealed by 4 lead lined doors.

There are lasers in the walls and ceiling. They use them to line up three tattoos, one on each hip and one over the gland. The Therapists use those markers to get me into approximate position before the scan. After this they must leave the room. I can speak to them and they to me. They also can see me on video monitors.

[/img]

Once I am lined up and the Therapists start the treatment, the machine rotates first in one direction and then the other. The machine can fire from thousands of angles, the beamletes are shaped by tungsten leafs that change depending on the angle of the machine. The level of intensity of the beamlet also changes during this arc. The idea is to limit exposure to surrounding organs, while ensuring full coverage of the gland and some surrounding tissues.

The radiation comes through the head, inside the center square the metal leafs shape the beamlets.

This is the special outfit you wear during treatment. Yes it is full commando.

These are my Angels/Therapists that set me up on the table and operate and monitor the machine. We spent 48 days together. I will miss them, but not the process. They were kind enough not to laugh during wardrobe malfunctions.  ;D

Three questions Bobby:

1.  How did you get them to let you hand pick your therapists (i.e. pretty girls)?

2.  What happens if you cough while you're being beamed?

3.  Why aren't there any pictures of your backside in that gown?

 ;)

i imagine the end of those treatments must be a bit of a relief. good to see you keeping your spirits up!

Good questions.

1. There are several of these centers in the area. I of couse interviewed each Doctor, and I of course toured the facilty. They are cute but on this one I went for reputation. I may be shallow but not stupid, this was kinda important. ;D ;D ;D

2. Actually that happened once. I knew it was coming, so I held it. The machine stops under the table for a few seconds and shuts the beam down while the next setting loads. when it stopped I said cough, and they stopped it there. I coughed and they rechecked my position, and started up. I had 2 code words for them  "Cough" and "Fart".

3. The gown has three arm holds so it wraps around you. When I get ready to get on the table one girl holds a towel in front while I flip up the back. Yes, the towel fell a couple of times, and they were kind enough not to laugh.

I sent them a mega fruit and cheese basket since they were all so good to me. They were part of my life every day for
9 1/2 weeks, they truly had my life in their hands. I received 81 Gy of Radiation as of yesterday. A one time total body exposure of 5 Gy would kill you in two weeks. Attention to detail in the planning and the Girls making sure everything was set up right was critical.

Totally Awesome that you are through all of that Bobby and I KNOW YOU are relieved that it is done. I'm SURE that the way you were treated while you were going through that, helps a bunch. That's Just Great! 8) ;)

Thanks again for the insight to all of what YOU went through and I'm SURE what you told US will help some through time too! ;)

I am four months out from my treatment and the Urologist said he would order the first PSA test in the 5-6th Month. He and the Radio Oncologist told me not to expect anything dramatic. I am a bit impatient at times so I pushed for a test. I called his office yesterday and got "Ian" one of his assistants. I always had the feeling that "Ian" would love to snap on the glove, that is not gonna happen.  ;D

Well the results show my PSA is .7 compared to the 4.1 when I began treatment. Ian said that was great, but I called the Radio Oncologist. He was surprised that there was such a dramatic drop and said I have no idea how significant this is. It may bounce around a bit for 18 months but, he thinks he got it.

I have passed all of my tests and am helping out on the volunteer flights. I have met a lot of Desert Storm drivers and while they are younger, they are really nice guys. I am learning some new tricks from them.

Life life is pretty good.
