Help identify these mystery bikes!
« on: November 05, 2009, 08:19:36 PM »
I'm trying to help a friend sell some bikes and but I have no idea what these two bikes are. I know they are from the same manufacturer because they both had the same "M" logo on them. Sorry for the crappy pics but the bikes were both burried. I think they're Motobecane?? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Bike 1

I believe it says "D52"

Bike 2

Of all God's creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the lash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat.

Yeah, I think you are barking up the right tree with motobecane... 1957 version of that red one you posted.

1966 version of the D52...

Sam is right, french mopeds.

I know them better for their bicycles.  ;D

Update! It seems that at least the first one in from the "Mobylette" family and the other on is closely related, although a more "sporty" version.

Check it out! The whole engine rotates!

And they even have a decent website: http://www.mabecanemobylette.com/

Isn't the internet a wonderful thing? :)

Is the emblem upside down on that first bike?  Looks like it.

That's a pretty cool way to operate a centrifugal clutch.

The engine rotates because the clutch is a variable speed sheeve type. Torque for low speed starts when the belt is low on the pulley and speed when the belt is high.
