I'm in the garage right now with the head cover off.  I'm in the process of checking my rocker arms to see if everything is ok for my project build.  Clymer states to take the threaded cotter pin washer and nut off.  Check.  It then states to gently tap out the threaded cotter pin.  This is not happening.  First off, which way do I tap.  And secondly, how much force is needed, because the adjectives gently and slightly forcefully are not working.  Any help would be appreciated since i'm trying to get these fools out right now...

I actually have another question too.  I noticed that as soon as I took off the head cover with the rocker arms, I immediately smelled nastiness.  I thought the PO left shiiite in my motor.  It smelled like those stink bombs you threw when we were kids.  I was wondering if this meant anything?  Sign of something burned up in the motor?

Did you have a helper in the garage at the time? Usually the cause of a stink. I'll go out and have a look at my stuff to see if I can figure it out.

The cotter pins are (as the name suggests) keyed to the rocker shafts.
They attain a very high grab in their mounting hole. They are removed by tapping/knocking the threaded end back down thru the hole.
Perhaps use a nut on the thread end to protect the thread etc.

Is there a real need to remove them?
Does the rocker action/condition exibit unacceptable wear?

Download the shop manual to at least give you some more detailed reference. I have not had much help from Mr. Clymer...

Regarding the odor, is this your first motor rebuild?  I ask because the inside of a 4-stroke gas motor has a particular smell when you crack it open.  The tone of the odor varies depending on the condition of the motor but even a clean motor smells funny when you crack them open.

A smell of sulfur is not uncommon. Some sort of by-product.
I don't know why this is, but experienced it in car engines too.

don't forget to remove the rocker end bolts first, then as stated put a nut on those cotters to protect the thread and tap away

yup first build ever.  I was wondering what the hell that smell was.  I thought there was a skunk in the neighborhood.  When I got up the smell went away. but when i took a sniff of the engine, it smelled like shiite, lol

yup, i removed the rocker end bolts.  I'll put a nut on tomorrow and try again.  I don't want to break anything I don't have to.  This is my first stab at taking a motor apart and rebuilding.   ::)
