Author Topic: How rare is the 1976 CB750 Hondamatic? (Read 23202 times)

I have ended up with a snotty 1976 CB750A. It has good compression, and a majority of the parts. Just wondering if i could get more than 500 for it. Im sure with about a days worth of tinkering i could get it to run. The carbs have already been cleaned and it has 4into1 pipes with the finned rings.

I know the cb750K are a dime a dozen so any info would be great!

get it running and clean it up some. IF you decide to part it out, DIBS on the rear wheel/drum

Some of the engine gaskets are pretty rare.

Well Honda only made them for about three years and I think the total production was only about ~8000 bikes.
Compared to the 750K that makes it pretty rare.

I don't know about the market for these bikes but certainly the "unique" parts would be worth something to someone who owns a 750A.

They're somewhat rare.....not many of them sold, but they have limited appeal. Most of the running 750a bring about a grand. A nice one can fetch 2 grand. The transmissions are bullet proof and never fail. The top half of the engine is close enough to the K model to exchange parts. The carbs are very similar to 550 carbs. The rarest and hardest part to find are the carb boots. No longer available from Honda and all the used ones have turned to stone. Not real collectible, but they are fun to ride, and always a conversation piece at bike night.

There were more than 5000 750a's made, not including the '75, which was only sold in Canada. They are pretty rare, but for some reason they don't sell for much. But that's great for a collector like me.

Not everyone's definition of collectible is the same. I happen to like the Hondamatics very much, but it seems most people have little or no interest in them. I know a guy that collects coffin keys. Not something everyone would be interested in but he likes them. It's all about what you like.

I was thinking it would be build a hardtail bobber using the motor and set it up with a jockey shift. A few 'old tymers' were telling me not to ruin it because its such a rare bike. I think it would be interesting since i have another frame to F-up. Surprisingly the boots are in good condition and so are the carbs. Though you say the boots are rare, i matched them up to my 750k boots and seem exactly the same, so not sure if its just a parts number thing. I have also heard that the top end is 750 through and through so thats good. I have always heard the 750A's are bullet proof and was going to kind of 'GI' it out, but it all comes down to should i mess with it or not. I know its my bike but I'm sure you catch my drift here.

uggh.. I just finished my 750k cafe racer but all i want is a bobber. i miss my welder.

i bet a cb750a with a really ridiculous amount of power would be a blast to ride. i've never ridden a 750a.....not yet anyways

the way i see it, i have the motor(+electrics and what have you, almost complete bike) and an extra frame plus a ton of chopper parts, Ill just build a funky bobber/chopper and have fun if decide to change the motor iit should be to difficult

If your carb boots are the the same as a 750K, then maybe thats what they are. The stock 750a carbs are smaller in diameter and are set closer center to center then the K and F models. Maybe someone replaced the originals wirh K carbs. I've seen it done before and it worked out OK.

The As were liked for drag racing from what I heard. The tranny is strong and the primary chain is excellent for handling power.

an automatic trans is always going to be more consistent in drags too.

The trasmission is unstoppable. Zero maintanence. And smooth as silk. The 750 is a bit slow off the line, but once she gets going, past 25 MPH, she's just as peppy as any other 750 SOHC4. At least, I think so.
I do love these bike because they are unique. A guy comes up to you at a meet, or a toy run, 'cause he had a 750 'just like that' years ago. Then he sees it's a Hondamatic... 'whoa, I've never actually seen one of these' followed by a long conversation about it. It just makes me feel good to know that I own a peice of motorcycle history, as well as a unique perspective of it.

I have a 1976 CB750A. It has a Windjammer fairing and hard saddle bags.
I changed the stock 48 tooth rear sprocket to a 38 tooth to reduce the rpms at higher speeds. This bike is as cold blooded as they come. Without the choke it will stall on you when you take off from a stop, even after its idling smooth. This problem goes away when the bike is hot. I owned an old Honda Xl600 with only a kick start. That bike was a bear to start if it stalled when cold. Once hot it started and ran like a top.
I've replaced a number of thing on this bike. The hardest (budget wise) part I'm still looking for is the right handle bar switches. I found 1 new one on e-bay for $150.00. I'm simply not going to pay that much.
Riding the A takes some adjustment, especially if you already ride. Besides grabing for a clutch that isn't there, there's no downshifting to use the engine slowing down. Its all brakes.
Mine is put up for the year in prep for winter. I hope to hone my riding skills next year when the temp get back above 60 degrees.

I had a '77 for a few months. Got it running and sold it for a small profit to a bike builder. I have a line on a '75 in stock condition but the guy wants $1500. They have appeal for side-car rigs and dragsters. If your stock exhaust is in good shape you might have a small forturne. Check the prices on ebay and you may be surprised.

A has a milder cam, smaller carbs (so boots may have smaller ID), higher out put alternator, Hyvo chain to trans (instead of roller chain), and also a Parking brake (I think)

Funny thing up in these parts if people ask about your bike they say 750 EH

Rare enough to at least get it running and give it a 2nd. chance at life....... a lot of fun to ride, different, conversation piece, unique 750/4 that you can fall in love with....not feelin' it??....please sell it to someone who would ( IMO ).
