1974 CB500 ?
« on: November 09, 2009, 06:10:01 PM »
I'm a new member to the forums that's finally got his hands on one of the classic CB's.

I picked up this bike not too long ago. It was listed as a 74 CB500. I didn't think too much about it at the time, but now that I've done a bit of searching, the 500 was not made in 74. Is this correct?

To make things more confusing, the title for the bike says 74 CB500. I've got the VIN if that would help clear this up.

Thanks.

The Vin # will help.
American Honda didn't offer a 74 CB500, that was the 550 year introduction.
On the front of the cylinder block will be a casting number stater 498cc for the 500 or 544cc for the 550.  That is just one tell-tale.

The title may be marked on the day issued, and have no relevance to the model year from Honda.  73 Hondas were also sold in the year 1974.

There can also be engine transplants, so the engine number is just as important as the Vin # in identifying what you have.
If you want to look it up yourself, I think the numbers are all posted somewhere on this site.

CB500-2116739 is on the frame
CB500E-2190395 is on the motor

The title was originally issued in 78. I'm guessing it was just a type-o. I'll see if I can't find the VIN information somewhere in the forums.
