1974 CB360 buy or not ?
« on: November 03, 2009, 05:22:05 PM »
I've been driving past this bike for years on the way to work. It's been setting out for a looooong time. Seat rotted off, tires rotted, air box gone, pretty rough. Tank, wheels, exhaust, gauges look pretty good. Odometer reads 18k, dont know compression but it does turn free with the kick starter.
I stopped a year or so ago and asked about it, left my number and never heard anything. Ran into the guy today and asked about it again. He said his it was his son's bike and he would take 200 bucks for it, not sure if his boy had a title. Not alot of bikes in my area. Any opinions ?   Thanks !!

I just picked up a very filthy but complete 360 for 250$ with no title. Check your antique vehicle registration laws, a lot of states are title exempt for bikes that old and you can register it with a bill of sale only.

The 360's seem to be odd ducks. The motors are not 10cc bigger 350's. It's a different design that isn't well supported in the aftermarket. They are actually similar to the SOHC4's as the heads do not have cam bearings like the 350 motors. I like them, they're weird. 200 seems a little high, but I live in the south and know how you feel about availability. We have to take what we can get, they're not plentiful around here. I drove to Iowa for my 550.

200 is his bottom line, I offered a 100 hoping he would meet in the middle, no go. No bike junkyards around in my area, wish there were. The rust really isn't that bad. Got a 78 750K I love, just looking for another project. I'm getting ready to start a engine rebuild and 836 big bore on my 750 so this bike would be on the back burner for a while.
I just can't stand driving by it every day, year after year. The pore thing needs rescued !  ;D

Pre 76 had cam chain tensioner problems unless it has replaced.  Was a recall on it.
I love my 76.   Drive it around town as much as my 650.

I like 'em, too.  I'd go for it!

BTW, you're right, the motors are MORE than 10cc bigger than the 350's.   8)  The 350s were actually 325cc and the 360's are actually 356cc!

Check your serial on the engine cases, if there is a punch mark you got your tensioner repaired by Honda. If not, there is a service buletin that will show you how to do it.

We need to get a performance post going on these things, I'm thinking DOCH 450 pistons might be a good candidate for these motors.

A couple of reasons that probably won't work -

1) CB360 stock cylinder bore is 67 mm, 450 is 70 mm - that's a pretty massive overbore (12'th over), there wouldn't be much cylinder "meat" left, and would require a special head gasket.

2) Wrist pins are different diameters - 360 is 15mm, 450 is 17mm - not sure there's anything you could do about that, unless you own a machine shop and have a lot of $$$$$.

And you can't always assume that shops did the punch marks for the tensioner replacement......
You probably won't have punch marks on the engine if it was made after the two "recalls".
