Will a vented gas cap work, or do I need an actual vent?
« on: November 07, 2009, 01:23:02 PM »
I'm building (or at least attempting to) my own cafe racer fuel tank. I'm going to be running it on a 550/650 hybrid engine (think paulages without the steroids) using early 750 carbs. I'm gonna do dual petcocks. So here is the question. Will a modern style vented fuel cap be sufficient, or do I need to have an actual vent like on the old race bikes? I really don't plan on doing actual racing with it, but I don't want to limit the potential of the engine with something that I could easily remedy.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Brandon

my opinion (and it's just that, an opinion) is that a vented cap should be ok.
Of all God's creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the lash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat.

Thanks Bucky, I place a lot weight in the opinions of most of the members here  :)  I was just wondering if the vintage racers would go through so much fuel that they had to have that vent, or if the old caps were non vent and that was why they had to use it.
