tank?
« on: November 07, 2009, 08:50:01 AM »
i have a cb550 1974, i have the manual and looking at the tank, my tank on the bike is not the original, i have the locking "trap door" cover over the actual fuel cap. i dont have a fabulous picture to show ya guys, & my bike is at work, im at home. would anyone know what year, type of tank this is?  just curious, as im trying to solve various probs, and my cap may not be venting correctly & just need more info.

I think 77 and 78 had that style tank after some lawsuit where a crash resulted spilled gas and a fire.

Gorms is right, I worked for Honda in the late 70s and all the bikes had these little flip latch buttons on the tanks. Then someone got in a flaming wreck and Honda recalled all those tanks. I had the mechanic install the new latch. It looked like a key lock off to the right side but was a fake lock. you can open it with anything, my 74 has the same cap.

I think we're talking about a few different things here.

First is a gas tank lid that opens with what's basically a button that you push down to unlatch the lid, like this (ingore the allen wrench JB-welded in there):

('74 CB200)

Second is a latch that looks like it takes a key, but will open with a screwdriver, like this:

('76 CB550K)

Third is a "trap door" on the tank that opens up, and the gas tank lid is inside, like this:

('77 CB750K)

It sounds to me like the OP is talking about the third picture.

I was referring to the "trap door" type.  The key type is just a newer replacement I think and is now used because the thumb latch ones are NLA.
