Well not my bike today, but Cliff (MadUncle) plied me with alcohol to clean up his CB450 "Black Bomber" cylinders so he could order some replacement pistons. His original pistons were rusted into the cylinders so he had to smack them out, and the cylinders were pretty awful.

Because they were so bad, I chucked the sleeves into my lathe and used my 3 stone hone and lots of Kerosene to remove the bulk of the rust.

It was working, but was pretty slow going, so I swapped the 3 stone hone for my super-duper Ammco 4 stone hone.

It was better, but not great.

I heated up the cyclinder block so as to pop the sleeves back in, before mounting it in my boring bar.

It took me awhile to set it up in the machine, it's really important that when you start cutting metal, the block is sitting perfectly square,

After it's first 5 thou pass the bore was looking better, but still not good enough, so it'll need at least one more pass before all the low spots are gone.

Sadly i'd promised to take my wife to see a movie ("The Lady in Black", which was pretty good actually) so I ran out of time, and I'm away all this week working at a Navy base on the Mornington Peninsula, but I'll hook in next weekend and get this done, hopefully there'll be enough meat left after I've removed all the pitting so Cliff can still buy pistons to fit! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Ha ha, it's not really hand cranked mate, it's automatic, but you have to wind the bar back up to the top of it's stroke after each pass. It's probably older than most of the bikes on this site, but still works well. I've had it for years, it came out of my cuz's Suzuki dealership when he sold the business, back in the 1990's. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Wow Terry, I am well chuffed, thanks for doing this work for me. Looks like I might be able to get away with second oversize pistons.

Who wants Bates bags and a roll Bar ?? and maybe a whole bike=========== Who knows maybe I will love that crisp handling ?

WOW that is sweet looking!!!! Why can't cool people live closer to me????

Jerry, a stock CB cable will not work. It needs to be modified because the exposed cable portion is to long. If you have done this already and you are having trouble connecting them try connecting the carbs first and then connecting the grip side.

Checked the plugs after running the new 120 main jets in the K5.
They looked good so I did another 70 miles of "testing"....
Maybe could drop the needles a notch, maybe.
Finally got the clutch adjusted properly. :)

Also pulled the battery box out of the XS650.
Getting it out is like working a puzzle. There's only one orientation that works.

550 re-gapped, re-timed, etc... + a carb sync .. test ride :)
It was interesting then to ride the 750 immediately after the 550... a very different monster.

A buddy came over on his old Triumph today, we rode some twisty roads in the foothills near my house.
I got a couple of false neutrals so I guess it's time to change the oil...ordered a set of oil filters from ebay.
Put my chain guard back on.  Was going to wait until I replaced my rear tire so I wouldn't have to worry
about scratching the new powder coat on the chain guard.  Instead, I just covered any areas that might
rub on installation with tape.  Got it on without a single scratch.  Pretty happy about that.

Nice!

I like your setup.  Is there a way to identify your light?  Our local truck/trail went out of business - I have to find my light online.

I rode the bejesus out of her last night, attempted a ton, got to 90, figured it's like first time sex, you can keep trying but it will happen when time is right  ;D

The part number for that light is RP-1307R  RoadPro Truck and Automotive Accessories.

You can do the ton easy on a 750 buddy, just twist a little harder ;) This video is kinda long, the good part is at the very end. Oh,and you only need the first three gears to hit the ton 8)

Haven't gotten that far yet. Want to do the sync ports first. Minimize the number of times the carbs are removed and reinstalled. The stock cables look too short actually. How did you guys make them work? I played around and connected the return cable without any issues but did not make a real attempt to do the pull cable since the carbs need to come off then it needs to be screwed in before reinstallation.. or so it seems.

I often times have my laptop in the garage along with the Honda Parts Catalogue, Honda Service Manual, Clymers, Chilton, CycleServ and Honda parts fiche print out. Not enuf room!

Last Wednesday I managed to drop the carb assembly on the cam cover and totally effed up the paint on the cover!   :( :'(   I removed and repainted it, but removal helped point out just how faded some polished parts were getting. So, today I bought a bench grinder and polishing wheels (finally!) and spent the day learning how to use them. With all of the polished covers on my bike it was either pay the big bucks to have the faded ones renewed or get my a$$ in gear and learn how to do it myself. Here are a few of my first attempts, in place on the bike:

I'll probably finish up the rest this week. The bench grinder was definitely worth the money and probably one of the smartest investments I've made on the project so far...
