The problem with alloy is that it 'work hardens' with vibration. That makes it brittle, and causes it to fail. Steel just takes much longer to reach that point. The manufacturers use steel because it's cheaper, and easier to work with, ie better profit.

The cooler on my sidecar is mounted in cups, because of the vibration it's subject too. It actually floats in the cups and is not 'fixed' in anyway. The cups are steel, but not because I think that's better, just that I already had them. If I had had to make them, they would be alloy.

When you say "it floats" , does it have rubber inserts or mounts, just curious, i have no trouble with Aluminum mounts, after having a couple of them fracture and fail i just rubber mount everything, i suppose it also depends on the quality {grade} of the alloy being used as well...

There is a piece of inner tube inside each 'cup'. Also a rubber washer between the cups and the frame were the bolts go through. Seems to work well, as the cooler and mounts came through the crash completely undamaged.

Considering that you came through that crash unscathed i am assuming you were rubber mounted as well....

Put 200 miles on the K8 with my bud Ned on his Buell. The K8 mis behaved the whole time, head shakin, oil leakin , cutting out at anything over 6k. But a great ride none the less , we spent most of the time on county roads , and only about 30mi. on the dreaded freeways !! Actually a very awesome cruise !!

Talk to me about this bike. Is it meant to carry a wheelchair? There is obviously a ton of work done here. What was it designed to do?

I haven't done anything to my bike, but I DID pass my driving test! I can finally ride around legally! All I have to do now is finish my bike.

- i've spent the last few days vinegar soaking nuts and bolts from my 2 project bikes, getting them all shiny again. prepped the triples for spraypainting this weekend since it'll be warm enough to do this out in the garage (as opposed to the basement

). also cleaned and adjusted the points on the 550 in preparation for some serious riding this weekend since we're getting what will probably be our last warm temps for a few months.

gave the throttle a couple of spirited twists, hit the starter, wound the idle screw up to a comfortable idle. put my riding gear on and rode of into a mavellous day. life is good, I love my bike.

I'm pissed off that I work up this morning intending to replace my fork seals and it's now 7pm, and I haven't changed them yet.

I did take my front wheel off, then took it over to the bike shop to get the tire swapped from one rim to the other, then replaced the discs, reinstalled the wheel in the forks, dumped some cooling system flush stuff in the radiator, took it for a ride for 30 minutes, brought it home, dumped the coolant (which still looked great after 14 years, amazing!) refilled the system with new coolant, (in a fetching shade of orange) dumped the oil (horribly black and manky, ooooher......) and filter, removed the clutch cover, polished it on my buffer, re-routed and lubed the clutch cable, cleaned the oil filter canister, installed the new oil filter, filled it with Castrol GTX (because I already had some in my garage) installed a new air filter, installed new spark plugs, removed the carbs, stripped and cleaned them, reinstalled the carbs, reinstalled the tank and seat, installed my new mirrors, removed the horrible foam hand grips and replaced them with new Honda grips, then fell over with exhaustion. Good thing is, I fired it up and it's running really well, and no leaks!

I'm still pissed off that I haven't replaced my fork seals though, hopefully the weather will be nice again tomorrow, and I'll get them done, hook up the other front caliper, bleed the brakes, and go for a fcuking ride!

I don't have eight arms like my mentor Terry - so I only sat down at my bench with eleven lengths of wire in different colours, and build myself a whole new wiring harness, complete with new connectors.

Makes me a little bit accomplished.
