Thanks mate, with only 27,000 miles on the engine I'm hoping that the stator is still OK, I tested the one on my 94000 mile engine this morning before I tore it out, and it's clagged, it was only putting out around 11.5 volts, and it actually backed off when I increased the revs.
I'll have to do a static test on the new engine tomorrow to see what it's like, if it's screwed too, I can buy a new stator for cheap on Ebay, so it won't be a big problem. Anyway, I got the old engine out today, what a frickin' nightmare! If anyone here thinks removing a CB750 engine is hard, the GL1200 removal process craps all over it for time consumption and blue language. Still, it's out, so that's good.

Interestingly enough, even though they're both 1986 Goldwing Interstate engines, the one I pulled out of my bike is "Made in the USA", but the one that's going in, is "Made in Japan". I thought all the wings from 1980 to 2009 were made in the USA, but obviously there was a factory in Japan too.

The exhaust headers were pretty rusty, so I've dumped them in a mild phosphoric acid bath overnight, and I'll give them a coat of exhaust paint before I put them back on.

And once I got bored with that, I hung up some new "Mobiles". Cheers, Terry.
