'Tis a red letter day today, I've finally got my new (to me) GL1200 engine from the US that I bought in October on Ebay.

Sadly it cost 725 bucks more than I expected it to, due to a greedy shipping agent and a greedier government, so my 600 buck engine ended up costing me exactly 2000 bucks by the time I rented a pickup truck to haul it home, but what the hell, with luck I'll be riding it by the weekend! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Hey Terry,

Did the seller say anything about the alternator?  The 12's have a history of failing stators.  It's an engine-out repair or a "poor boy" external alternator to repair.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Thanks mate, with only 27,000 miles on the engine I'm hoping that the stator is still OK, I tested the one on my 94000 mile engine this morning before I tore it out, and it's clagged, it was only putting out around 11.5 volts, and it actually backed off when I increased the revs.

I'll have to do a static test on the new engine tomorrow to see what it's like, if it's screwed too, I can buy a new stator for cheap on Ebay, so it won't be a big problem. Anyway, I got the old engine out today, what a frickin' nightmare! If anyone here thinks removing a CB750 engine is hard, the GL1200 removal process craps all over it for time consumption and blue language. Still, it's out, so that's good.

Interestingly enough, even though they're both 1986 Goldwing Interstate engines, the one I pulled out of my bike is "Made in the USA", but the one that's going in, is "Made in Japan". I thought all the wings from 1980 to 2009 were made in the USA, but obviously there was a factory in Japan too.

The exhaust headers were pretty rusty, so I've dumped them in a mild phosphoric acid bath overnight, and I'll give them a coat of exhaust paint before I put them back on.

And once I got bored with that, I hung up some new "Mobiles". Cheers, Terry. ;D

finally got my christmas present to myself.  Painted my caliper as well, all I need to do is cure it in the oven or grill but I think it turned out great.

Fcuk it was hot today. It was around 80 yesterday, but today it was well over 100 in my steel garage today. I'd drink a glass, then sweat two, all fcuking day..............

Anyway, I tested the stator and pulse generators on the new engine, and they checked out fine, so (with the help of my son) I shoved the 250 pound lump into the frame.

I had to run off before I had it all bolted in as the guys at the shop where I was buying the new battery were closing at 4pm because it was so fcuking hot and they wanted to go to the pub, but that's OK, that's where I was heading too.

Tomorrow will be a lot cooler though, so I hope to have it all bolted in and running by "Pub Time". Cheers, Terry. ;D

A lot more work to do, but she's on her way.

Re-wiring from scratch, making my own bars, and quite a few other goodies. She's going to be light, nimble, and quick.

The last 2 days have been carb days. Rebuilt a set  for the next 550. I like to have them on the shelf so I don't have to screw around with them and lose momentum  when one is going back together. I tag them and bag them with ID/ Date rebuilt on the bag.
Got one decent set of carbs for the 81 650. It came with a set that I'll clean again ( the bowls are beautiful but the tops are a little sticky) , and 2 racks that had different broken parts on the #2 carb, switched the parts out ,cleaned everything twice , replaced the O rings, looks good. Put those in an open end plastic bag with ID/ rebuild date on the shelf for later use.
This carb stuff all started when I found a set of carbs from a 73 750 in a box and decide that they should be cleaned up and ready for rebuild kits. They are ready now, in the bag on the shelf. with cleaning date only.
2 racks of decent PD's in the box not wrapped in plastic bags but very clean, can't remember if I did them already. I'll open them up tomorrow and see if they have new stuff in them. Hope I did , sick of carb cleaner right now. Ha! Did them last winter, spotless and new on the inside. Just cleaned them up a bit .

Rain yesterday took the salt off the roads.  Mid 50's F and some sun today.  Took the 750 out to get some hardware just down the street.  Funny how the store is only a half mile away, yet there were 50 extra miles on the clock by the time I got home!  ;D

Took it out today once the roads thawed out. 36F when I stopped for gas. I managed 20 miles but man my thumbs were sore and my eyes were watering! Bike rode awesome though.

Is that your Benly at the back there?

Wouldn't mind one if those - but hard to find over here.

Well my new (to me) GL1200 engine that I had shipped out from the US is now installed in my bike, and running. (well, not now, I switched it off before I came inside, silly.....) Good news is that it started first press of the button, didn't blow any smoke or leak any oil or coolant, and just purrs.

The seller told me that it was in really good condition, and a check of the plugs (nice uniform brown shading) and oil (like new) told me that this was a well cared for engine. Once I had it running, I hooked up my voltmeter and it was pumping out a very healthy 14.5 volts which was a great relief, I don't want to pull that 250 pound monster out again any time soon to replace the stator.

Still lots of work to do, the PO did no maintenance at all, so the discs are almost paper thin, the fork seals are p155ing out oil, the disc pads are soaked in fork oil, the seat needs a new cover, etc etc. Quite a few more hours work before I'll be happy with it, but now I know that the engine is good, I've got the incentive to spend some more time and  money on it. I'm really looking forwards to getting it done and out on the road again! Cheers, Terry.  ;D

Ha ha, apparently he just pulled them out of his dad's garage and parked them on the footpath and they were gone when he came home from work at the cafe that evening. I did the same with a stereo a couple of years ago, it was gone within 30 minutes! ;D

I have a Benly that I am thinking about unloading. Runs and drives fine. Needs talc and love to become beautiful again.  I am debating moving it on in order to make room for the next great idea.

Kleen Strip Prep-n-Etch'd my tank.  1 bottle and then topped it with water.  Probably 1:5
Rinsed w gas., and then filled.   Came out nice and clean after 90 minutes.

While the tank was steeping, I pulled my carbs to fiddle with my fast idle cam linkage.  Replaced that little o-ring at the top of the accelerator pump bowl.  O'Rellys had one that fit perfectly for  $.50  :D  Got the squirters pumping well, checked floats, carb cleaner squirt through every passage, bench sync, my fast idle cam rotated to engage earlier(by the hex and locking nut holding the throttle bell in position on the slide linkage),  and back on the K8.
Quick vac sync....and went for a ride.  Sunny, and chilly N of Seattle.

Replaced the 125 main jets with 115's on the latest project bike. 125's seemed a little large for a 4 into 1 Mac and stock airbox w/K&N filter. Replaced the D8EA spark plugs with X24ESU from Rockauto.com (Denso 4099). Swapped the dual points for a Dyna S. Took it for a shakedown and managed to do the ton*. It was running out of steam about 90mph previously*.
