Cut off and replaced my plug wires, new wire and NGK splices. Hopefully this clears up my rough running in the rain.

Pulled the caliper, replaced the seal and bleeder valve.

Bled the system, took no time.

Went for a ride, doesn't squeal as much. Guess it's time to get the rotor drilled and thinned.

The darn thing is so shiny.....you'd think I polished it.
If it ain't raining, I'm riding.....~~{iii}?~~prost

If it sounds like I know what I'm talking about, it's because I cut and pasted from someone else.

Tackled the valve adjustment for the first time. Put nearly 5k on the bike since I got it so I figured it was time to give it a go. Much to my relief it still ran when I was done! Thought I would surely jack something up in the process. Smooth as a baby's ass 8)

Now that you've accomplished that, please do it a bit more frequently-cam chain and valves every 3000 or so.  It may not be necessary but it is good preventive medicine...Larry

Is that on your '77 CB750 mate? I had a real problem with my first F2 back in the 1990's. Every time it rained it'd miss and fart, so I initially splotched silicone sealant around the coils and plug caps, to no avail, so I replaced the coils and wires with new ones from DSS, but it made no difference.

I then replaced the points plate with a new one, still no difference, so I replaced the entire ignition system with a new Dyna 3 ignition and Dyna 3 Ohm coils, silicone wires etc, but no difference, I only had to ride thru a wet mist, and that was enough to make it run like schidt.

I bought a Suzuki GS1000 and sold the F2 to a guy in Sydney, who took it to a Honda dealer when the missing and farting problem occurred, and they just replaced the ignition switch, and he never had another problem with it. Oooops............ Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

My oldest and I had our first road trip to pick up a new edition to the garage. I guess good thing for Ipods cause he was bored out his mind on our impromptu pickup. Nice 550F with a little over 8k original miles.

Spent the day with Anders installing the stock airbox onto my F and putting the pods in a box to the side. Much better running now. Took a ride to go visit Mike Rieck and check out what he's doing as well as drop off the reamaining components of his alternator (32 amp) upgrade.

Hopefully have an update tomorrow about syncing carbs and working on the front brake...

Finally started cleaning the engine for my 550 project. I spent several hours cleaning. It's still not clean enough to paint, but I hope to finish cleaning tomorrow and to glass bead the cylinder and head.

The left side case cleaned up nicely with lots of elbow grease, 5 different grades of sandpaper, and simichrome polish.

The seat from the '74 cleaned up beautifully, but I don't think I am going to use it. I think I am going to use the equally nice '78 seat I have.

I also discovered:

(1) that the front sprocket appears to be from a 750, which would explain why even though the bolts were tight, the sprocket still moved.

(2) the muffler that came with the '77 550F is a Honda muffler, an HMMG5 A, which a Google search says is from a CB1100F. So it will be interesting to see if it works with the 4-1 Header that came with the bike, and if the header is even one for a 550. I am going to test fit on the '74 tomorrow.

Scratching that 550 itch in a big way aren't you Nick.

Did you sell that spare F muffler? If not it looks like you have a use for it now.

Thanks Dan. This was from your area. on CL for only a few hours when I responded. I missed out on a really nice survivor 76 550k yesterday so the hunt continued.
I sold the 550F muffler that was damn near mint. I couldn't see myself using it. This one will be a project. The muffler isn't to bad and the bike has almost no rust. So with my other 77 550F I will make one a nice stocker and the other a cafe.

Great work on your 550. Will you be attending rockerbox, vintage week at RA next weekend or mid ohio in July?

Thanks for the offer. I should be able to use the front sprocket from the '74. But I'll pop the case off tomorrow and if it doesn't look useable I'll let you know.

I plan to head up to RA on Saturday on the Goldwing. I really wanted to have the 550 ready for next weekend, but the crappy weather and other commitments just haven't given me enough time. Now I'm aiming for mid July to ride with the Michigan team again in the rally. I'm sure I will also make it up to Rockerbox again this year on one bike or the other.

Hey Terry, yes the 77k. If its more than a mist it runs like its on 3 cyl, but only when letting off the throttle. Once I'm accelerating it stops stuttering and runs like normal, if the rain stops and things dry out its back to normal, so far I've got new points and condensers, new points cover gasket and grommet. I even put o-rings on the screws of the points cover, new plug boots and as of today wires. The coils look fine, no cracks, it does it regardless of if I'm riding in the rain or the bike is just sitting in the rain.

Funny you mentioned the switch, that was the first place I was going to look if the new wires don't solve the problem.

Cheers

Ha ha, that so reminds me of what I went thru mate. yep, when it was dry it was a rocket, but as soon as there was a hint of moisture, it'd miss and fart and run like schidt.

Mine might have been more advanced than yours mate, but I'm betting it's the same issue. Anyway, continue replacing all those parts mate, it probably needs them anyway. Cheers, Terry. ;D

With that low of miles I would consider hunting down original sidecovers and exhaust. Clean, original bikes with low miles like that are the ones brining in the big bucks on ebay....

Sometimes an old windex spray bottle full of water will isolate leaky electrical
leads/etc.. Lightly mist around suspect component and see if problem shows up. Use good judgement and don't over soak, dry when you're finished.

Here is the  title. Originally bought 3/25/77. Original owner. This is scary to hold as it's brittle as hell. Definitely going to register it tomorrow.

Haha, I'm sure they do. On the pluses side it's looking and running better than ever, if I find some spare time I'd like to clean all the electrical connections and test the charging system for good measure. I'm finally getting to the electrical stage, mecanicals are pretty tight. Got a set of cb750a aluminum wheels of of bikerbart that need to go on as well.
