This site is great I tell ya!  I would get a non runner and it take me months to clean and get running. This ia the blue 77 550F I picked up last month. Cleaned the carbs.  Cleaned the points. And vrooom ahe runs! Pic is of the red 550F tank I got with my 550F pick up on Saturday. Got NOS side covers in the mail today for it. Very pleased how it turned out.

Sorry for the dark pics. Took them less than an hour ago

Now the tough part is deciding to keep the red body work or the candy blue.

Congrats and good job.   Very satisfying to do start up.  Keep the tank with the least rust inside.

Thanks! Both are almost rust free... But the blue tank is for a 75-76 550F so it isn't "true" for the year. I am soaking the blue one in vinegar right now to get any little specs out... Force of habit I guess.

The red/gold combo is what I want to do with my 550, but more of a ruby red.

thanks sean. Looks like the blue tank will stay with the bike and be sold. Reds the keeper!

How come you passed on the tank? Will you be heading up for vintage week at RA?

I tried to rebuild my rear brake master cylinder yesterday....... But was hindered by a snap ring that has become one with the metal around it. Think ill need to get another MC I tried hitting in with a hammer and screwdriver bug the darn thing won't budge any ideas?
Also tried to put my front brake on to realize that I'm using 77 F lowers with 75 F wheel and rotor anybody had this combo before?

Well I threw all of my freshly polished covers back on the motor to protect it from any water while I degrease the motor for paint. Once I sprayed the industrial strength degreaser on the motor the aluminum had a nasty reaction, immediate oxidation. Back the the bench for those.

Degreaser used:

Fast 505

Parts involved:

Tappet cover
head side covers
breather cover
clutch cover
stator cover
alternator cover
sprocket cover

Lesson learned

Clean engine before starting polish and protect polished parts right after they are polished.

Yeah I think I am just going to wait until the paint is done and then I will pull them off and redo them, couple hours max.

It's easier to polish together for me, but for final buffer wheel ill take them off too.   I have heard the secret is to preheat the cover before heading to the wheel

you talking about that Ksmith's Dunstall?...he wanted a little more than I wanted to pay, plus fiber glass tanks are risky business with this e10 #$%* gas, plus I already got a Read Titan full body kit waitin' in the wings that has basically the same tank.  Is RA this weekend?  If so, no.  Going to the vintage show at Gilmore Museum this weekend, but RA is definately on my bucket list.

Gilmore and Road America have conflicted since they started the RA event. I really wish that they would move the RA show to a different weekend.

I found that I like to do the polishing with one step. I use the grey fast cut compound from harbor freight and the sisal wheel and it comes out just like I want it to. I do think that is why they discolored so quickly though.

What do you use for your last step?

back to black...
painted a little. Put my shocks back on and the un-original seat that came with it....went back to my flat track bars too... working back to the reason I wanted an old SOHC4 in the first place. Wasted so much time "bobbing" it, no I am playing catch up as I return it back to stock-ish until this winter when I really get into it.... Live and Learn

That's exactly my thought.............I originally bought my 750, cause I wanted something that I could ride and enjoy, and not worry about the looks of it.

I wanted to be able to "ride, ride, ride Sally ride"......no matter rain, shine, or cold.

Got a little carried away with 750k5, started to polish, shine, got a whole set of tins and side panels, wanting to paint in original color scheme.  That, in itself,  is more expensive (even though I have a nephew that does awesome bodywork and painting) than I had intended. My Harley is for the ride and shine, my 750k5 is for the ride and adventure and conversationalist bike.

I have peeps stopping at lights asking my what kind of bike it is......gotta love it.

The 350f1 is on the back burner.

The 100 is gonna be ???????? just that, don't know, engine is seized and parts are rusted beyond repair.......but 50 bux.......couldn't resist.
If it ain't raining, I'm riding.....~~{iii}?~~prost

I have tried a clear coat but usually just normal aluminum polish

Went yard sale picking this morning close to home and ran up on a 1976 750F that I had looked at at least two or three years ago at a different location around 40 miles away.Offered the guy a price back then but offended him I guess and he would not talk to me again. It was his Fathers bike that was given to him.Oh well since it has changed hands  I was able to get it cheaper than my offer before from this 'new' owner. Always kinda wondered what happened to it.
Old Yeller, (didn't have this color of 750 yet)  has been neglected but the paint is good and its mostly still original.Have the side covers but they are pretty much done for. I started it back then when I took a battery out of the bike I rode to see it.Hopefully should again after a good going through. Dyna ignition but the best part is it has just a little over 8700 miles on it. Hope it keeps the nickname Old Yeller and not Big Ugly Lemon  ;D
