Broke your impact driver?!   Go buy a Craftsman, they are not the best but they do have the best warranty.

Hi edwardmorris,

...first try electolytic but it was not good enough so I took the chemical stuff, took only 30 minutes  ;D
What did you use for the chem? I'm pretty close to setting up the electrolysis stuff, might be a good idea to have a chem backup :)

...I used Ammon KREEM (ruststuff and sealer)

Here You have some pictures of the electrolysis try, still has some rust inside.

Get some phosphoric acid mate, it's cheap, won't hurt your tank and much safer than creating your own hydrogen gas plant. Can you spell BOOM! ? ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I'm in the process of doing a complete engine rebuild including replacing the crankshaft, rods, gearbox bearings etc for a guy called Mike who contacted me after buying a CB750 Cafe Racer that "just needed a top end rebuild"................ Anyway, I need to strip the cases so I can weld the rear mounting lug back on and do some thread inserts, then get the cases cleaned up for paint.

Before I do though, I need to reassemble the transmission in a K6 engine I'm building for myself, so while his is intact I'll use his as a guide to do mine. I had my cases blasted last year so yesterday I washed and air blasted all of the remaining grit from the cases and gave them a coat of etch primer, then some (probably too bright) silver engine enamel. I let them air dry overnight, then put them in my industrial oven and cooked them at 300 degrees F for a couple of hours.

I've since switched the oven off and I'll let them cool for the rest of the day (crap weather today) and tomorrow I'll clean and shove my transmission back in before pulling Mike's out. I'll leave mine apart until Mike's is ready to assemble, and then use mine as a guide to rebuilding Mike's. Cheers, Terry. ;D

The K8's front brake was dragging a little on a ride yesterday so I thought I would pull it and have a look.
This isn't bad is it? ha!

Better now....

Reinstalled and bled em...

Did you re-use the brake pads Steve ?. Looks like you or the PO did some 'groovy' cutting on those to maybe try to rid them of the famous Honda squeak. Some pretty bad lateral line wear or grooves there though also. Think it is best if a person cuts a relief line on them is to go with the flow of the rotor not up and down..

I did reuse them just 'cause I didnt have a set on the shelf. The brakes just started squeaking yesterday - but not when the lever was pulled.
I'll be replacing the pads and giving the caliper a couple coats of VHT paint soon.

Looks like someone with a hacksaw cut the grooves (3) in them in the up and down position. I have tried cutting a (one) groove before across the pad on the earlier K bikes pads but in the different direction. Not sure what or if there is really a 'HOT" tip to eventually avoid a squeaker.
She did look like a dirty girl  ;)   :)

The PO did it, I've never had the caliper off since I bought it two years ago. The brakes always worked great til this month. I'll be ordering a new piston seal too.
Sometimes I think I'll sell her but then after a ride I decide against it, she runs so good.

Remind me how that works again Terry? I have a tank I want to strip and keep raw (with a clear coat).

G'Day Cliff, I'm not sure if phosphoric acid would be good for that, as it leaves a fine coating of Iron Phosphate to prevent further rusting. I suppose you could remove that with an abrasive pad dipped in thinners and quickly clearcoat it, I just haven't tried it myself?

Have you picked up your XJR1300 yet mate? If so, don't forget to post some pics! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Cliff, it will etch metal, so if one leaves it in the tank for a prolonged period of time it can cause pinholes in the thinner rusted areas-that is unfortuneately spoken from experience...Larry

Hi Terry,

...I can spell "BOOM" for sure  ;D
I did the electrolysis try outside so there is no way to store some gas to let it make BOOM.
I know the phosphoric acid stuff but I bought a complete tank cleaning/seal set and this stuff is working #$%*ing great  8)

No worries Georg, I've been gun shy of Hydrogen gas since I blew the battery up on my first F2 when I was installing a Dyna ignition, the case burst open and dumped battery acid all over my bike.

The rust remover in your tank sealing kit was most likely phosphoric acid, it's used in pretty much all of the tank sealing kits as it's the safest acid that you can use, phosphoric acid is used in chrome polish, tooth paste, food additives, household and industrial cleaners, fertilizer, and even in Coca Cola and most other Soda drinks.

Larry is correct, if you have a really rusty tank it'll eat all of the rust, and if the rust has eaten thru the metal it'll obviously leave pin holes, and if you leave a tank in it for weeks it'll eventually eat it, as it will most cast materials like fuel petcocks, carb bodies and cylinder sleeves etc, but only in extreme circumstances, it's the only acid that I'm confident to use. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Very nice Adam, and you can still talk to me mate, I bought a 1989 BMW K100RS SE a few months ago, I'm just waiting for it to turn 25 next year so I can get it on club rego. Cheers, Terry. ;D

put a genuine seat on mine today,i got this from christo a while ago for services rendered,it was missing the rubbers underneath that support it,christo ordered some parts from david silvers and included the rubbers for a swap for a kids mini bike i found and got going, fair trade we thought,i was using a david silvers repro for a few years that was fine,it lacked the rear honda logo though, this genuine seat still has the protective clear film wrap over the chrome trim!ill leave it on till it falls off!

The "Genuine Clear film Wrap" was actually the protective coating Dave, and wasn't meant to come off. It just seperates from the chrome over time. Cheers, Terry. ;D
