Progress again...! Got the head back from my local tuner that fixed the head. 8 new valves, adjusted spring force. Inlet valves had dimples (Mike Rieck helped me with lash caps), new CycleX ex super flow valves replaced due to loose fit in guides.

Good looking head! Make sure to remove the old copper exhaust gaskets.

Went for the first ride of the year. It's always a good year if I am riding in April. Nice weather report for the weekend, more snow coming.

Cleaning my spare set of 500 carbs. They were pretty nasty. Top right is after a short dip in NAPA Carb Cleaner and some nylon brush scrubbing.

You need my special tool mate, I can take 'em out without damaging anything. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

The very soft bearing retainers are usually locked with punch marks too. These marks must be drilled with a 3-4mm drill, 3-5mm deep to unlock by removing the destroyed threads.
The other retainer is bad as well, maybe worse. I cut and drilled it into 2 pieces, bought new that I did not lock, my hub is already looking as a Swiss cheese since the replacements earlier. I cannot see how it can move when bolted in the swing. Maybe I'll get new experiences about that this summer :) I have to keep my eyes open.

Good looking head! Make sure to remove the old copper exhaust gaskets.
I was thinking about to reuse the copper gaskets. I torqued the exhaust with that in mind last time, not maximum. They have been used max 2 hours in total.
I have new ones to use, maybe better to be safe, no need to remove the exhaust.
Next, time the cam when everything is bolted and torqued without thread disasters. I'm always worried about the cam tower/caps bolts when reaching 12Nm despite most of them have thread inserts.

Edit: Cyl studs are Kibblewhite mounted bottomed out in the case threads + 8 ft Lbs, nuts standard DIN6331 10.9 grade that was possible to fit. Used thinner washers under nuts to use most of the threads of the higher nuts. Maybe possible without washers, oiled surface under making sure that the head is not scratched, small alu chips.
New cam sprocket from Falicon easier to mount than the previous APE

Bikes been running a bit rich for a while. Well since iv had it really. Dave500 showed me today how to check the needle clip height and bloody hell, it was sitting on the bottom slot. So we set it back to middle slot. Also put air screws at 1.5 out. Was at 2.5 previously probably trying to compensate for the low clip height. Bike has a 4 into 1 exhaust. (Mac).  PO probably thought that it required a change due to this.

Runs better now. Better low end acceleration and feels more responsive.

Dont get me wrong. It was running good but compared to Daves, it was lacking at the lower end. I am lucky because i can ride Daves bike which is tuned and runs to perfection and i noticed how mine wasnt quite the same. Its closer now. His runs just amazingly. Probably better than off the showroom floor. Anyway a good afternoon learning session. Heres a pic doing a vacuum check at the end.

Cam timed, cam sprocket bolts glued with blue thread locker. Valve lashes done and cover on. No thread disaster today too!
Valve cover gasket from yamiya much better than my previous flimsy one from a kit back in the 80's. No extra sealer needed. I used a very thin layer of Permatex copper spray gasket on side facing head.

Cam timing was easy in frame. The frame mod kit neded to cut the triangular bracing, holes in them when mounting frame back was used fror cam timing equipment. No need of magneto foot.

Tomorrow new plugs going in. I have fouled 3-4 setups of plugs when I tuned my carbs with flowing floats.
I hope I'll put everything together and able to start it. Maybe i add an extra relay for my new double snail horn probably need some amps not good for the horn button.
