Gold dude. RC means it is from a sandcast?

Orientation of R1 will let you k ow if it is a sandcast. The F came with an R1 as well but it is in a different location.. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=135216.0

Took delivery of this beauty yesterday, a '77 550F. It has all the aftermarket goodies we all love, Vetter fairing, humongous seat fit for a Queen, sissy bar and a nice rack sprayed in rattle can black!

The bike also has a few notes in various places, including "Premium Gas Only" and "Flamable" on the gas tank [Really??] and my personal fav on the side cover...

On the other side cover, the PO skillfully installed a toggle switch. It left me puzzled for a bit until I turned on the key and flipped it on, it is the starter switch!

Nice stickers too, eh? And it has matching skull valve stem covers, he was going for a theme, ya know.

Poured in some fresh fuel, a new battery and it fired up in a minute or so, sounds good even with the aftermarket muffler.

Spent a couple hours taking all the crap off and cleaning it up. Bike is from the desert in NV, so rust is amazingly minimal. I managed a short ride around the block, now it doesn't look half bad...but has a ways to go.

Cool.

My first reaction to photo one was "KILL IT WITH FIRE" but by the end of your post I see you have managed to 'sensibilise' the bike a little.

Wouldn't mind a 550 - damn hard to find over here in Australia though.

Opened the top cover today. Just when you think you're almost done, something else goes wrong.  >:(

on the other hand, just found out my 75 750F has a Sandcast R1 camshaft on the head :)

Hopefully the rest of the day will go well
My F cam said R1, too.....don't think it's an indication of sandcast, but correct me if I'm wrong.....
Sorry you have a vertically challenged cam tower stud :-\

Yep, "R1" doesn't indicate a "sandcast" cam, I've got a box full of CB750 cams here and several are marked "R1", including one that came out of an F1 that hadn't had a spanner on it until I pulled it apart. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I spent my sunday morning with some degreaser, a toothbrush, and some hand towels. My rear rim was NASTY...all black with oil and brake dust from PO. I had yet to clean it, over 1 year later, until today. Also cleaned up the sprocket, and chain in the process. Rear wheel rolls nicely now!

Did a start up on the K7 after a carb rebuild, I always like the first start up. Idles good but not rideable yet. Needs full tuneup next, parts ordered.

Painted my pilot light panel, disk brake cover, and kill switch. They were all chipped and faded. It's the little things, ya know?

Ran to the corner store for some NyQuil for the wife. Forgot to turn the gas petcock back on and started wondering why it was running so bad when I pulled into my drive way. When it wouldn't start, my brain finally clicked.  :o

I might need to tape a note to my handlebars or something...

Gassed up the CB750, poured a little Lucus carb cleaner in her, rode great for about 13 miles and spit and sputter took over.......apparently she don't like the carb additive.

Runs like crap, backfiring, spitting, sputtering, won't go over 20 mph, just barely made it back home..........crap.

Got some work ahead of me I guess....

That's odd mate, I use that Lucas stuff in my bikes and have never had an issue with it. Maybe it loosened up some sludge in your carbs and that's blocked your jets? Cheers, Terry. ;D

Bud,

Don't rule out that a non-fuel issue is causing it. Just like with target fixation when riding, troubleshooting fixation has caused many a wrencher to run headlong down a dry hole.

Sudden loss reduction of power and 30 MPH top speed sounds a lot like one coil/point set dropping out.

I've usually check the heat on the pipes when it's idling, usually with a quick touch. All the pipes felt purdy damn hot, I pulled the spark plugs, cleaned them, have all the bowls dropped right now, and the jets are coming out to reclean them, and I'll see what happens.

I've got a spark plug wire tool that lights up when place on the wire, and all wires show spark.

I'll probably put the carbs back together tonight and give it a try. I'm thinking that some sludge cut loose too maybe.
If it ain't raining, I'm riding.....~~{iii}?~~prost

If it sounds like I know what I'm talking about, it's because I cut and pasted from someone else.

'Finished' wirewheeling the frame. There are a few corners I couldn't get the wheel/drill into, but that's the case on a few parts so I'm fairly certain I will be asking the PC to blast what parts they need to where they need to.

I also got my new aircleaner box in the mail yesterday, it's in pretty good shape so I'm pleased. Slow and steady. :)

Well put over a half a ton of Buffalo in the garage tonight. A younger fellow antique picker friend of mine called me on Sunday and said that He found something I may be interested in. Looked at the pics he sent and said I am in. He called this afternoon and we met up in a little burg a little to the west of my house and I picked him up with the truck and trailer and we rode over together and loaded the poor souls up and a few extra parts . He had made a deal for $200.00 on the pair earlier and we loaded them up. Of course I paid him a very fair finders fee as is the etiquette in this business. Good friends out looking is a valuable asset.
The poor pinky 72 has suffered a major hit and has some scars and at this point the engine is locked so may be destined as a parts bike to help my others. If I need money  just the four shoe front brake set up should put me into a profit on the whole deal.
The blue bike is a 73 and "ran when parked". Engine turns, has a title and the mileage may be low if we believe those odometers. I have a few others and these can be a money pit but you do not see them often very cheap so I by 2 strokes when I can.
The funny part was when we stopped to pick them up the owner knew me from years back from a mutual friend , damn long hair, need to get it cut so I have a new look   :D
