Thanks,
I tried using rubber bits from some bar end weights, but had to adapt to the notch on the base to keep it from spinning. I had forgotten about the bicycle goose neck, I guess that design has been floating around in my memory for forty years, and found it's way out at 11:30 last night. ;D

Worked on the side covers for the CBX.  Both had the rearward post broken.  I still had one of the posts, but not the other.  For the post that I still have, I super glued it back and then reinforced around it using some plastic weld epoxy from NAPA and mixed in some radiator repair compound, the metallic kind, to see if that would lend extra strength.  The other one, I used a bolt that I ground the head on so that it would fit better.  Will use a modified nut as the piece that goes through the grommet.

Still need to JB Weld or something around the nut to make it slide in and out of the grommet smoothly.  The nut has been ground and sanded and will work as is, but could be better.  Almost final results:

Finally got the rear wheel back on the 550 complete with new spokes, sprocket, tube and rim band.

Used http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=368.msg205745#msg205745 as a guide for the spokes. An excellent how-to write up.

Today, I took my '71 CB500 on it's maiden voyage after installing the complete induction system from a '78 CB550K. It's completely transformed the bike. We did a 250 mile breakfast run this morning - Fuel mileage 2 up cruising at 70 mph went from an average of 42 mpg with the original carbs to an honest 50 mpg. Cold starting is instant and warm up is smooth. The bike idles like it had only a single carburetor. Power, especially the ability to accelerate and pass without downshifting, is noticeably improved. SWMBO mentioned it to me before I even had a chance to ask her what she thought. Noise from the intake is about 1/3 of what it was with the original airbox and filter. And best of all, I got all this without seriously altering the bike's appearance. It wasn't a cheap mod, but it sure was worth the expense and effort, IMHO.

Thanks to all the knowledge on this forum I finally fired her up today. I read the tuning advice from all you all and put the key in and..... nearly killed the battery! Duh so psyched forgot the choke. Three kicks later, she fired, smoother than when I put her away (after the bike shop said they tuned her last year) no more valve noise, smooth running.

2ND mistake, so involved with her Saturday, didn't make it to DMV for registration, so a couple quick spins around the block is all I could do!! Calling for rain tomorrow.... bummer.

Thanks again all ya all...............here she is.

No. Like I said, it was the complete induction system. To make this swap work, you need the carbs, plus the '77 or '78 manifolds and rubber connectors, plus the '77 or '78 rubbers that connect the airbox to the carbs. Those parts are all different lengths than the '76 and earlier models, and there are some diameter differences, too. And of course, you have to use the later style throttle cables, plus get a choke cable. I lucked out and got all the hard parts at a salvage yard for $60, then had to overhaul everything. Had to buy three new cables, 4 carb kits, 4 fuel needles.

Well took a few steps forward and a few back but over all progress. At least its a rolling project now! Made some brackets for the rear turn signals, started cleaning up the front brakes for paint.. Also painted the handle bar end caps to match the frame. Also more I just don't remember at this time..lol

Just yanking your chain ;D  I avoid bad weather these days too.  one thing to get caught in it, another to purposely go out in it.....we just had severe thunderstorms go through here. and I have a semi rain gear outfit.

checked the plugs after a few hundred miles to see if I'm rich/lean/whatever, and they're in the 'Good/Best' range on Dan's MC page... sort of a 'soft white/gray' with a little white on the electrode but not much.

Cleaned the saddlebags, helped MickeyX with her Harley and we went for a nice little ride out near Bald Peak and Newburg.  ahhhhhh..... needed that. :)

front left turn signal went out. :P  time to decide on whether I want to go LED or just get regular bulbs...

Fixed my Sportster brake switch that lights up my tail light when I go on the front brake. (someone bent the hell out of my brake handle while I was parked at work last fall and it broke my switch inside) New-to-me brake handle was $10. I replaced that last fall when it happened. I fixed it with some tape built up on the spot the handle hits on the switch but it finally gave up the ghost completely a few weeks ago. I finally decided to put the switch in since I had the time today. The new switch (sat on the shelf in the garage for 8 months until really needed) was $70. :-\ Of course, now the back brake light switch stopped working too.  ::) I cleaned off the plug tips and prongs but nothing. It never ends. It's at least easier to replace. No soldering and heat shrinking, just pull it out and plug another one in and re-bleed the brakes. (pressure switch I think)

Replaced my right side hand grip and throttle sleeve with a new-to-me one for $1 from the HD pull off place. It was ripped up from the PO so I finally got around to putting the other one on after 1 1/2 years of ownership. I figured since I had the whole thing apart... ya know.  :P The HD guys just look at me when I don't want to slap a bunch of chrome on my bike or I'm okay with a used part. Well dear, you just sit there in the parking lot looking shiny and talking about riding. I'll actually go ride mine, thankyouverymuch.

I swear, it looks like a HD swap meet in that parking lot every weekend. They just sit there, eat, drink and then ride home. Unless it rains of course. Then it's full of cars. As Kit and I ride past for breakfast and a nice wash-it-while-you-ride-it kind of day.  ;D
