Got drenched on it. Tried to beat the rain home last night, but didn't. Spend about 40 fun filled minutes in a steady downpour and another 20 or so hiding on lower Randolph until the worst had blown by. On the positive side, the bike ran beautifully except during the worst of the rain when I did experience some hesitation and bogging. I think I need to cut my plug wire ends and make sure the plug caps are sealing properly.
Ohm out the caps while you're there. They may need replacing.

I am already planning on a variety of maintenance activities this weekend including a thorough wash and detail, valve and timing chain adjustment, and fork seal replacement. So I will add testing the caps to the list.

Delivery day!  ;D
Got some points plates and advance units.

ahhhh....you YOU'RE the lucky one who scored that ebay listing  :P

:D
Yes, thanks, more crap I don't really need but it was a good deal.  Unfortunately two of the plates had Daiichi points but oh well.

Daiichis have good parts to poach.  Condensers are fine. Also, save the circlips, washers, etc.
They'll come in handy some day.
Just ONE of those advancers goes for more than what you paid.

I was worried about the pods too Sean. At the time there was nothing I could do about it. It runs so well right now I am hesitant to mess with it by installing the airbox from my 74 project bike.

Took the cover off to see what was being noisy in there. I think I found the culprit?

This is the second valve spring she's broken!
-So I have just pulled a complete set of nice valve springs out of my spare engine and tomorrow I will pull out all the rusty ones and replace them along with all the valve seals. Should have done this the first time round, now it will cost me another head gasket  :-\

Sean, the rain/pods combo could definitely have been the primary cause for the hesitation.

You can change that spring without pulling the head... if you use some backyard engineering  ;)

Stuff that cylinder with cotton rope to support the valves. Rotate manually to TDC. Then, a sharp but not brutal blow with a rubber mallet onto the stem (socket inverted, cover with a rag) will dislodge the keepers. Lift the retainer, springs, and replace. Installing the retainer takes a bit more ingenuity to compress the spring, but essentially its reversed (no mallet blows this time).

So my tachometer gear housing broke in two as I attempted to remove it.

So, I turned the carcass into a plug with that nifty putty stuff!

Well,

After completing the PAMCO wiring to coils yesterday, and following the good advice here on break in procedure http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=12686.0, I squirted a little fuel down each fuel line to see if my freshly built CB836 would start.

Wow.

The darn thing ROARED into life at the merest touch of the starter button, and I mean FULL REVS!

Ignoring the sudden need to wee, I grabbed for the idle screw and frantically would it down (and flipped off the choke) and by then it had used the fuel in the lines anyway. So it runs, that is for sure. I was a bit concerned about the way it was stopping, as in - as soon as there was no fuel it just stopped cold and let out a little wheeze.

I really want to make sure I get good oil pressure which is why I have been assiduously following the recommended pre lubing and breaking in process. Last thing I want to do is over cook it.

So - no more running for today, it had two quick bursts at around 15 seconds each. I am turning it over by hand to make sure it all still moves well, it turns okay on the points nut but it is still stiff on the kick start. I guess it will free up on the kicker once it beds in (yes?).

Why was I squirting full down the fuel lines and not running off the tank you ask? Well - my freshly painted tank has pin holes in the underside (!!!) so I need to take it to a welder and get them fixed next week, then probably get it repainted after the welding has (most likely) spoilt my paint job.

Ah well - at least my bike starts - I am a very happy owner.

 joda!!
you can put pressures air in the kompresion thamper..just pull the cam..and presure up use a old sparkplug. hammer the glass.veld a air line in it
..then the valve are hold in ,and up..and you can do the job ..thange the sping..no need for pull the head

Day 2:
Carb service (PO had carb troubles...wonder why  ::) )    Float needles from 1-4
Also found a pilot jet loose in bowl #3, and the float valve in #1 wasnt even seated all the way.
Tank de-rusted, phos coated and lined w MMO.
Battery tray had acid damage and rusted.  Removed, wire wheeled, and in the phos bath.

I have read about filling the cylinder with cotton rope or air pressure to hold the valves up but I don't know how you compress the valve springs to put the keepers back in.

I have taken it all apart now anyway and found several broken springs! Lucky none of the valves had both inner and outer springs broken!

After cleaning up the exhaust valves, I found they are quite pitted - but I need the bike back together as it's my transport at the moment until I save up enough to register my 4WD - so I put them back in wishing I didn't clean the pitted sealing surface as they will leak worse now  :-\ (forgot to take pics..)
At least the inlet valves after cleaning, look really good!

I have replaced the valve seals but I think I'll re-use the head gasket cause it came off undamaged.

The 1&4 exhaust valve stems and underside had a lot of build up of very pale tan stuff(almost white), but 2&3 were black with no excessive build up???
