yeah theres something about original faded paint that appeals?only factory once,i got Kghost to supply and fit another sport demon rear for me other day,Tim dont rush the strip out or refit and it may seem like only fitting a tyre but great attention to detail,he has a pair of early 550s in his shop right now and one of those weirdo 650s,boy the top end on those is ugly,wish my 550 had the same power though!

Where was it made Dave? I was pissed off to discover that the new Pirelli Sports Demon on the front of my silver BMW K100RS was made in Indonesia! Fcuk that, I'll stick with Korean made Stinko's at half the price.

Spotty and I had a great day in his garage today. Somehow Spring has reverted to winter this weekend, with the temps in the low 50's, and pissing down rain that was getting blown into his garage's main door, just where we like to stop and have a cigarette during a hard day's tinkering. Anyway, we finally opened my new Yamiya exhaust system for my K0, after it's sat in my garage for most of this year. It was a bit like a scene from "Raiders of the lost Ark" as we both caught our breath when we saw how well it was packed, and how shiny the pipes were!

Installation was straight forward, but would probably have been easier if I had the correct bolts for the footpegs. The bolts are 14mm OD, and the OEM bolts are "Necked down" to 12mm threaded section that protrudes through the mount on each side of the frame, but all I had were 14mm bolts. As an experiment I'd actually used my super dooper magnetic heating coil to soften the threaded portion on one of the 5 bolts I bought from an Ebay seller, then used my lathe to cut the old thread off the bolt, then used a 12mm threading die to cut a new thread a few months ago and it worked fine, but when I tried it on another, either I hadn't heated it enough, or the die was fcuked, because the second one didn't work as well and was a biach to thread, so I gave up and just used two 14mm bolts, after Don told me the overall length of the OEM bolts.(thanks mate!)   

I was absolutely stoked, after some of the guys here told me that the insides of their Yamiya pipes weren't coated, but mine were, so hopefully they won't rot out like the originals did. On top of that, I happily discovered that the box contained new K0 style heat shields, and all the fitting hardware that apparently usually aren't included, even the joiners and clamps at the rear of the mufflers. The only things it didn't have were the two rubber bump stops for the stands, but Spotty ratted through a box of various rubbers, and we found two that will do the job, so fitted them.

We'd installed the ignition (Dyna S ripoff from China) and I'd thought that the white wire connected to the yellow wire, and the black wire connected to the blue wire, so had reconnected them a couple of weeks ago. When we went to start it, it was sparking with a beautiful fat blue spark (with my little jumper attached to the battery) but wouldn't start, so I swapped the above mentioned wires around, and it fired right up, at around 5000 RPM! Fcuk!

I'm guessing that one of the slides is hanging up. Spotty and I had (we thought) routed the 1 into 4 throttle cables really well, so wondered if the tank was pushing down on the cables, so we released the rear of the tank and propped it up above the cables, but it made no difference, so next time we work on it we'll check the cable from the handlebars to the carbs, and if we can't find anything, we'll remove the airbox and see if I've somehow installed one of the slides backwards.

Regardless, it was running on all four cylinders, and has more compression than any CB750 I've owned, even those with high comp big bore kits, and I had to go find my jump pack so I could crank the engine over. Good thing was that there are no apparent oil leaks, and the pipes look lovely. I'm really looking forwards to a nice warm day so I can clock up some miles on the old beast.

Thanks Stu, I was more than happy with my Delkevic 4 into 1, but the Yamiya pipes were so cheap (like me…) that I couldn’t resist them, and do look more at home on an outwardly stock K0. No cutting or anything else needed apart from tweaking out the left footpeg hanger that must have been slightly bent in a crash sometime in its 54 year history. Once we sort out the hanging carb slide, I’m really looking forward to riding it again, it’s too much fun to just park back in my storage unit, like I’ve done for the last couple of years.

So I picked up this beauty last week. All stock except for the Windjammer, back rest and engine guards. Those 3 items I removed and are for sale if anyone wants them. $100 obo. put all the stock parts back on. Anyway, starts up but I think I'll do a complete service including carb rebuild.

One thing I do need is an exhaust. I would like to stick to stock if I can find a clean one. This one is rusted through.  If someone has one they want to part with please let me know. If not, I'll look at Delkavic or Hindle or a nice used exhaust.

The stock mufflers have holes in them?
While you're searching for good used stock exhaust,you might use a small tip oxy/acetlyne torch to braze-in a couple pieces of sheet metal to patch the rust holes,temporarily.
I hope they're in a place you can't see;it has worked for me.

The problem areas are where the mufflers meet the headers … I guess it’s a common problem.

Yes,that's the low-point where the water sits;after carefully cutting out the old and prepping those areas then brazing in the pieces of thin steel,it might help to make a small hole to drain the water.

Well yesterday Spotty and I dug into the K0 to see why the engine was idling at around 5000 RPM. As expected, #3 carb slide was not correctly lined up and was sitting at the top of the carb. Easy fix, switched over #3 and #4, as it looked like I'd incorrectly installed them into the wrong carbs last weekend. OK, so we filled the fuel tank again and fired it up, and it was not running on #3. Bugger.

We pulled #3 spark plug and while sooty, it still sparked fine, but we gave it a clean with a wire brush and brake cleaner and reinstalled it, and it was running on all 4 again. Great. As it warmed up on the bike lift though, the idle crept up to around 2000 RPM. Bugger, again. Turned out (after draining the tank and removing it again) that the metal "1 into 4" throttle cable junction was sitting at a weird angle that made the 4 cables angle upwards, and when the tank was put back on it was pulling the cables up slightly, raising the idle. Another easy fix, removed the left ignition coil and moved the cable junction beneath/between the coils so that it was sitting level, and was able to move forwards or backwards so that once the tank was back in place again, it didn't foul the throttle cables. Excellent.

We fired it up again and the biggest problem was that as the throttle assembly is an aftermarket item, it doesn't have the little knurled screw and spring to lock the throttle tube while the engine warms up to operating temp. The hole (unthreaded) is there, so next weekend we'll tap it and install the screw and spring off another throttle assembly. The battery needs charging after sitting for almost 2 years, so we had to use my jump pack to start it with the button. Regardless, I wanted to take it for a quick ride, so we fired it up and I kept blipping the throttle to stop it from stalling, and did a couple of laps of the blocks around Spotty's area, and it ran well, but felt like there was an occasional miss, so next week we'll install new plugs and a fully charged battery as well as the throttle lock screw, and hopefully, it'll be good.

We'd also rebuilt the front brake master cylinder as it had been leaking, and while I have a good hard lever (everyone loves a good hard lever....) the front brake is really disappointing. I'd intended to replace the OEM stainless steel disc with a cast iron item from Robinson Engineering here in Oz, but never "got around to it" so I'll have to order one because at the moment, it's just awful. Anyway, it looks nice with the new pipes, and sounds good too.

Well I haven’t posted in a while but in the last week I

- installed Hondamans ignition and got everything shrink-wrapped and tidy
- found a locking mechanism for my custom seat, and have that all operational ready for upholstery (went with a slam latch for a boat locker, it’s unlocked by a pull cable that comes out near the pods)
- installed vinyl liner for electronics tray to reduce rattle
- figured out how to attach battery, ignition etc to electronics tray. Velcro! Works like a beauty, is cheap, and I used heat-proof glue. Keeps everything secure without needing custom brackets etc

Thanks Bill, it’s a lovely old bike, one day once I’m retired (14 months to go) I’ll strip it down and restore it again, but for the time being, I’m just looking forward to riding the wheels off it.
