Put it back together after repaint tins and fork seals/boots/polish, repainted badges.  Quick picture, sorry for the clutter.  Better ones to follow.  Took two kids for quick rides.

replaced both front and rear rubber with Duro classic vintage tires... which look pretty rad. cleaned the front forks with Nevrdull. gas'd her up and hit the road!

Put on my new rear wheel with fresh bearings, and a new 34 tooth sprocket.  New tsubaki 530/98 is soaking in a bag of oil; that will go on in the morning, along with a new front sprocket, and a freshly black painted sprocket cover.

I didn't know the wheel was from a 77-78 550 when I bought it, didn't even know that mattered.  So, I bought a later brake panel, and corresponding spacer to get everything to fit.

Oh!  I did a nice cross hatching on the brake hub before I put new shoes in there too.

Hi Mark,

NEVR-DULL and/or LUSTER-Pads but be careful with the NEVR-DULL! in the polish wool are steel particles and if You are using to much pressure it will do light scratches to the chrome.

Have a good one...Georg

Yesterday I rented a storage space so I dont have to keep covering my bikes with tarps and and leaving them sit in the rain.  My shop space is less than ideal for bike storage, its on the 2nd floor of a warehouse with no access to the street unless you put the bike on a truck and lift gate it down.  I was able to get the Honda inside last night but when I rode there on my Kaw my code wouldnt work.  Im sure it was some stupid mistake, I'll be getting the Kaw inside later today.

Yesterday I also finished my clutch lever and most of my front master cylinder.  I'm going to post pics on my build thread in just a few.

Mark,

I have been using Turtle Wax Chrome Polish and have had NO problems with it. It does a great job on chrome.  Others swear by Mothers. I have not used it, but would not be hesitant to try it. For other metals, I swear by Flitz.

Started it up and took it up and down our road several times.  Everything was fine and dandy and than suddenly I felt it lost power.  Pulled in the driveway and sure enough it would not idle.
Took it to the shop and it eventually started but the #4 - all the way to the right - is running much hotter than the rest.  Anyway took out PAMCO, cleaned the T|F|  marks and checked and adjusted timing.

Now for #4 - I think it is in the carb.

Interesting thing - with the air filter off if I hold my hand on the suction of every other cylinder  it just slows the engine a bit. but if I close the intake on the #4 it shuts down the engine.

Am I just an idiot and only the #4 is running?  Suggestions appreciated, next action when I buy new tachometer cable.

Changed oil & filter, adjusted chain, found #4 header was loose & leaking so got that fixed up. Proceeded to screw up the rear fender tire pressure sticker by seeing if I could attach the rally flag to the bike. Still have to hook up a power tap for the video camera so that I can record some of the rally ride on Fri & Sat. Did a rubber to rubber check of the bike to make sure all was ready for the meet-up on Fri.

with stomach flu running rampant overnight thru our house, my 8 year old son and i took turns reinacting The Exorcist all night.
Called in sick at 5am.  slept till 8.  felt pretty good.

had a shop in town pull my front bearings for a few bucks cashmoneys.
didnt have a bearing puller and the anchor bolt method had nothing to bite on.
installed new all balls kit fresh from the freezer.  polished all bits individually as they went back on the front wheel.
cleaned up front rotor w brake cleaner. put wheel back on. bled front brake.
started up and rode until dinner  8)

it was a good day.  ;D

Solved the missfiring problem (loose wires at the 1-4 points) rode it for 40 miles to test it out and then shined up the chrome to clean up from the rain Saturday during the Chicago stage of the relay.

Installed new plugs last night (NGK's) Old NGK's looked like black toast. I will be pulling the carb rack after I "read" the new plugs at the 100 mile mark, Just to give me a starting point to go on.
I saw that Carb #3 is leaking a bit at the overflow, so I'm sure the float levels are wrooonnnnngggg. Thus the reason why it loads up at idle so much, freeway speeds = runs good, around town, not so much.  :P

Pressed on the master link plate on my new Tsubaki, popped the clip on in the correct direction with no problem.  Had to borrow my neighbor's motion pro chain breaker kit to press the plate on..what a difference the right tools can make!  Adjusted the rear wheel/chain slack as well as I could without someone to sit on the bike.  Put my sprocket cover back on, went for a test run..#2 wasn't firing--bad plug. Limped home, changed the plug out and she fired up like a beast.

In the last week, I've changed my chain, sprockets, wheel bearings, and brake shoes...feels good.

Greggo,

We'll be able to meet up and ride SF sometime soon. I dropped my frame off at the powdercoater today. In two weeks it will be final assembly time.

Last week one of my rusted old mufflers finally decided to die... so I spent the first part of the afternoon installing a new pair of EMGO shorty megaphones and the rest of the afternoon was spent riding.

My old mufflers were more or less empty cans, but they sounded great.  The new Emgos are basically 17 inch long glass-packs and they brought out a throaty growl that I never new my mild-mannered 650 had!

Installed 4 new Emgo mufflers today, changed the oil, cleaned up and freed the front caliper that was sticking, installed a new tube in the rear tire, heading off to Cleveland in the morning for the Relay, bike is running like brand new, I'm excited. Love the way it sounds, takes me back 35  years, that SOHC sound.

My 650 fell over because of the piss poor design of the kick stand and my stupidity luckily I only broke the front turn signal and I was replacing it anyway.  Lucky me.  Rode the 550 to workand I love that little bike.
