what's a tank slapper?

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=90969.msg1017044#msg1017044  Watch the videos.
Jesus.  That looks terrifying.  So a steering damper can prevent that?

Being they are performance bikes, they likely had dampers already, so no a damper won't prevent it. A damper may make it manageable. Having been the recipient of a TS that un ceremoniously, and very quickly threw me to the ground at 60mph, I'll say the TS usually begins with a problem. An improperly set up suspension, etc. tho in many cases its an act of God and nothing could have been done to prevent it.

In my case the HawkGT had a reputation, unknown to me, for tankslappers as the front forks were of an old design (happens to be the same design as our CBs). A deep pothole at speed overwhelmed the fork which translated to a tankslapper.

Cartridge emulators fix the problem. I doubt a damper would have helped me. Now with the emulators, a damper may be a good add on.

The problem with putting a damper on a bike that didn't come with one comes if it is done before EVERYTHING else is addressed. Bearings, tires, forks, rear shocks, swingarm, etc. Once that is all sorted, THEN you put on a damper.

You don't want the damper to mask a fundamental problem. IMO

i met asphalt.   :'(   highway 130, san jose. more broken heart than bone.
i was coming up to a 90* right turn. started to brake and hit some loose stuff (its a mountain road). rear brake locked up and swung out left on me. then i think i flipped over the bars. i remember touching down with my foot and kinda flying off the road and into a ditch. it happened sooo fast. a gentleman stopped and helped my stand my bike up and push off the road. he even waited with me the hour and a half if took for the tow truck to get there (thanks briant!). got it towed to South Bay Cycles (tom will fix her up like new). went to hospital, all xrays checked out fine. just sore and embarrassed and bummed. :(      o well. its a life lesson. live and learn :)

Glad you ok!

@kc glad  you're okay! Bummer about yr bike.

Did the EvapoRust treatment on my 750F tank this weekend. PO had done a poor liner attempt and after it had sat idle (though full of gas) all winter there was a good amout of light rust in the bottom. Replacing the petcock anyway so figured I'd do it while I had the tank empty. Also thanks to @Spanner1 I now have the proper o-ring for the accelerator pump valve (between the bowl & the #2 carb body) and all I'm waiting on is my replacement float needle to button those back up. He (and I, to a lesser extent!) set my timing last weekend so this is one of the last pieces of the puzzle before that damn thing is back on the road after a 1-year hiatus. YAY!!!!

Also replaced the petcock & cleaned the carb on my '77 kz400 with the single-carb setup (plumbing parts!!). Probably selling that thing soon though. :(

Here's a pic of the setup before I cleaned it:

Worked on a recently acquired second bike today ('87 VFR700).  Changed the fluid in front/rear brakes and the hydraulic clutch.  Think it was overdue?   ::)

Runs well, actually. More responsive than my '76 kz400 w/ stock carb setup. It's a 32mm(?) 2-stroke dirtbike carb. Just needs a bigger main jet I think, as it stumbles a bit in the higher rpm range.
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

I got this luggage rack because I wanted it.

I got the sissy bar because I love my wife.  ::)

At least I don't think it looks as bad as I thought it would, and I got a good deal from a forum member. :)

*edit: The sissy bar will only be going on for long rides.

I have both for my bike too. I pulled them for Mods vs Rockers, but I do some commuting with my bike and both are just too damn usefull to worry about the fact that they kind of spoil the look. I like having a back rest when I have a passenger too.

Finally got rid of the dwindling remains of that 36 year old cork points cover gasket and sealed it up with some cool blue gasket goo. Also tidied up the electrical under the tank a little.

I actually posted earlier 'bout doing something I shouldn't do. Exchanged the tag from my 750 to my 350, and went for a ride. She rode great IMO. I let loose the handle bars while slowing for a red light, and I noticed a little wopple in the front end. I chalked it up to the fact the tires and wheel look as if they haven't been balance, and the fact they are a little dry rotted. As I was checking the exhaust headers, I looked up and low and behold, what do I see. The triple tree is cracked (see following photos).

What to do. Well, at the very least I need another bridge.

If anyone has one and wants to part with it let me know. I've already gone to ebay, with no luck.

If it ain't raining, I'm riding.....~~{iii}?~~prost

If it sounds like I know what I'm talking about, it's because I cut and pasted from someone else.

After being parked for a year, I got the old girl fired up.  Had to use jumper cables from the car battery; but after a few tries it ran like it should.  Gotta get a new battery.

Rode to the office. It's supposed to rain later (possibly hard with hail), but what the hell, it's sunny and beautiful now and I have my rain gear with me.

Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead!

I can sympathize, Elan. I've got an original K2-K6 seat that I can't get because Canada Post is on strike. Tracking tells me that it was processed at the plant in my city... so it's just sitting there!

They may be legislated back to work later this week, though.

well not today but i got the motor out of the 350f, nice and easy with the help of a friend. when i pulled the oil pan found lots of sludge in it, along with some chunky stuff. i think its clutch material cause none of it was magnetic. but everything looks ok inside. netx step is to finish stripping the frame so i can clean and paint it. but first tattoo convention this weekend  :)
