Don't usually fettle or tinker, I Perfur piddling

But when I am not piddling around in the shop, I like too just dick around the house
I'm the exact opposite. I do my dicking around in the garage and when I go into the house........it's time to piddle ;D
I was dicking around in the garage yesterday and moved the advance on my Dyna 2000 from 35 to 40 degrees. Seems to run a bit better but I noticed it idles higher after a 10-20 mile run up the road. Time to break out the Carbtune me thinks.Well............thats enough piddling for me!!!! Time to get out to the man cave for some dicking around action!!!! ;D

I finished connecting my electrical harness! To-do for tomorrow: Put in the oil, mount the tank and put on the exhaust. Hope to start it for the first time in 5 years tomorrow.

Prepped the Jugs and Top case...  then painted both.

gasket removal is boring and tedious ... hopefully it pays off and there are no oil leaks :)

The gunmetal will match the wheels and everything else that used to be chrome.  Hoping that look achieves the style I am going for.  I will probably have to repaint the tank with a nice stripe to include the gunmetal theme.

Thanks! I mocked up the jugs on the top case when I got home from work.  I almost blew a load.  I am glad I went with the gunmetal over silver.  Silver is played out, I dare to be different.  My first round of parts from HDLParts.com showed up today as well as my Vesrah kit,  I will be going forward asap with prepping and painting the lower case, oil pan, head/rocker cover, and oil filter housing.  Then its time to replace the Primary chain, cam chain and tensioner slippers, wham bam boom, install and ride before the snow flies!

So I got the aluminums all trued up and balanced with new rubber. While removing the old bearings, I realized how odd the sprocket looked.
Upon closer examination, I found the letters NEP followed by "Tuff One"

Google to the rescue. A company called N.E.P. manufactured Tuff One sprockets in the 70's.  It is made of a nylon/plastic material and is 50% lighter than a steel sprocket. Here's to it actually holding up for me. Ha.

haven't been on either one of my bikes for over year...until the other day. put the charger on overnight, filled the tank and did a thorough visual. fired right up and i sped up and down the blacktop four or five times :D

still right back where i left off tho, with needing to sort out the jetting. no biggie, might have time for that this year yet...

Justin..

The nylon sprockets should hold up @ least as good as aluminum..possibly close to steel..if you always make sure that your rear wheel is true/lined up well with the front sprocket.  The two things that will wear them fast though..are misalignment with the other sprocket..and leaving dirt on them (hence their being better suited to road bikes/cruisers..rather than off-road uses).

I've used nylon sprockets for many years..with no appreciable wear compared to aluminum or steel..and inspecting/cleaning when necessary..as per above.

They definitely run quieter and with less vibration that the metal ones..in addition to being lighter.

Finally got around to doing my "spring" tuneup ::) Oh well, it didn't need very much adjustment since I've hardly ridden the bike this year. I might synch the carbs tomorrow. I'm looking into doing a top end rebuild this fall/winter since my oil leaks are getting so bad.

Finished connecting all the wiring in the headlight.
Everything worked the first try!  :)
Including the signal buzzer, which until now had been missing from this bike.
It's delightfully annoying. I wonder how long I'll be able to stand it?

Then I crammed the wiring in and installed the headlight.
Hooked up the clutch cable.
Installed the fine rotor shield I got from member seanbarney41.
Bled the brakes a bit more.

roughed in the wiring harness, filled the bowls with "gas". kicked and cranked, turned up the idle, and for the first time in probably ten + years, it runs.

I wish I masked off stuff as well as you dave  ::) haha, painting my 550 motor has been a real PITA, I almost wish I never decided to freshen it up a bit.  Should have just pulled it apart, replaced the primary and put it back together.

sorted out some headlight wiring, and figured out why my awesome trailer tail light wouldn't trigger when hitting the brakes.
lots of fun wiring surprises from the previous owner.  It may be better this way though. I'm learning a lot about the bike in quick time.

cliffs to an already short story:
diagnosed problem and put a new headlight switch in.
diagnosed problem and re wired the tail light (the correct way).
