You're polishing definitely improved it a bit, looks good.  How'd the rest of the bike look?

There is satisfaction hidden in the polishing wheel. Oddly enough.

i cleaned up a filthy head and barrel,i just blended where the seat is inserted in the exhaust ports, someones already scooped out the bowl area a little.
i also de burred the inlet manifolds and matched them to the head.
this 550 barrel has been overbored to 61 mm,i was told by the old bloke i got the motor from it only needs rings, ive had a lot of stuff from this guy over the last couple of years and he has tools lying in dirt and open cases in the weather etc,it had been assembled less the rings,i found a few bits in the bottom end,and just discovered this after the clean up,someone has busted the rings on install and not noticed, there is even a bit of ring embedded in the gasket surface here, the bores look good but i havent miked them up yet.

Looking good Dave, what did you use to clean up the ports etc? Have you got pistons to go with the big bore cylinders? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

What did I do to my bike today? Absolutely nothing.  I was supposed to get it back from the shop this morning, it's there getting the rear hoop welded on and the batter/electronics mounts done under the 'hump'.  Got a call saying that it wasn't done and I'm gone all next week so I cant get her back till next Tuesday.  Now I'm going to be two weeks behind getting the tank and seat to the painters so I'll be lucky to have my bike running by early/mid Feb.

i sand blasted all the carbon away then i used a carbide cutting tool to square up and match the intakes and i just spun soapy steel wool on a slotted bolt for all the finishing, the pistons from that bore look cheap and the rings were broken during assembly it looks, the bores look good, ill keep the barrel on the back burner for a while terry.

Completed the top end of my 750/900F. Threading that cam into the chain and sprocket is tricky! Finally realized that the chain threads on first then the sprocket. Chain sits between the sprocket and the cam sprocket flange. Can't install the chain to the sprocket first or slip the chain on the sprocket from the far side, jusr the inside. That way the chain will fit onto the sprocket which will then slide onto the cam. Haven't done it in 10+ years. Just a LITTLE rusty and the manuals aren't real specific. All new hardware except cam towers and rocker shafts. Next up - install tensioner, set valves and degree the cam.

Tried to unstick the motor. One week now with trans/acetone and finished with pb blaster. No luck. I think i am going to try putting rust remover of some sort in the cylinders. Got nothing to loose me thinks.

Nope, took out the Yoshi Daytona and I'm going with a Megacycle 125-75 this time around. Hoping to get a little more HP earlier this way. Yoshi comes on strong at 7000 rpm. I do have a frame kit installed and I now have the practice of installing a cam.  ;) Wish you'd asked yesterday, I'd have done a comparative lift measurement.  :) My Daytona does have one small nick on an edge of one lobe but it's been that way for MANY miles and I knew it was there. The rocker arm did sustain some additional wear due to it but I don't think it affected the performance. So now I have the Daytona cam, my stock F cam, a 78 K cam and 2 spare engines - a 1000 kit to build and a spare stock as far as I know 75 F to mix and match.

more cleaning and checking, this might explain the broken rings, the smallest piston at 60.93 wont drop through any of the bores from the bottom, itll drop in from the top till that point,it appears it hasnt been properly hone finished and i doubt the ring gaps were even checked let alone piston clearance,i can see the high spot mark in the bores,it would have been hard squeezing that barrel down but this hero persisted,i think ill be able to rescue the pistons and barrel with a decent measure and hone through, this looks to be 750/61mm pistons in a 550 barrel.

nice polishing tews, funny how a rag goes black but the parts go shiney.

What sort of hone are you using Dave? I've got an Ammco adjustable hone here, they're fantastic tool, you can get a very straight cut out of them, and I've known guys to use them to take a cylinder out one oversize, (long and tiresome process, but doable) if you've got access to something similar, it'll make your job easier. Cheers, Terry. ;D
