Big improvement on those gauge housings. That's one thing that I've yet to take off the bike and clean up. What was your cleaning method?....besides elbow grease, that is....
On the housings I used some very fine steel wool with a dab of chrome polish added to it to remove the grime you see that is still on the one on the right. Most importantly I applied an extremely small amount of pressure. Decorative chrome is extremely thin and wearing through to the nickel and then copper base metals is something I did not want to do.
If the housings didn't have as much gunk and grime on them I would have never used the steel wool and would have just washed them with soap and water then skipped to the next step below.
Once I went over the housing extremely lightly with the steel wool with some chrome polish, I wiped it with a clean microfiber cloth then proceeded to use a small amount of chrome polish with another microfiber cloth with light pressure to clean any remaining blemishes.
End result is no swirl marks at all but unfortunately their are some very tiny pin point blemishes that cannot be removed. At the same time though, with 33 year old chrome plated housings I am not going to worry about those tiny blemishes. This bike is to enjoy riding and not to look at and clean every spec of dust off that hits it.
Best part is that not much elbow grease was required at all for mine. Hopefully you will have the same luck with yours!
