That may just be debris from the pre-rebuild engine that's been knocked loose during the rebuild process and has floated to the pan by the new oil.  I say change the oil and run 'er another 100 miles then drop the pan again.

Swapped the oil pan from a K parts bike to a '78 750F because the p.o. stripped the drain bolt and had it held in place with gasket maker.

Stepped on soldering iron with bare foot, quite an achievement  ;D

Sorted out and mocked up wiring for R6 controls on 70CB, it all works now.

Bingo, that was my thought too. 

This is sounding promising but I am not going to keep my hopes too high.  I dont really care about the sealer in the pan, but the shavings of metal concern me.  I did find 1 cylinder was in pretty rough shape during my rebuild (really needed to be honed) I just wanted to get back on the road and was going to do rings and head work this winter....  I wonder since I neglected to pre-oil the cylinders for the initial startup maybe the ring was chewed up by the heavy grooves in the cylinder wall? My only other concern was that maybe in lining up the cases one of the main bearings came loose and didn't seat right and was chewed up. I did make sure to use build lube on all the crank and cam bearings, as well as cam lobs and rocker components. 

Engine knock would increase in volume/frequency with RPMs would it not?

Sometimes you have to walk away from the project to get some perspective...

I suggest knitting, for something completely different.  Maybe a nice baclava cor the winter riding season?

I was so pissed at the time I didn't care about diagnostics.  I will go pull the paper towels out of the trash and test the bit and pieces.  What inside the motor is steel just gears?  what are the bearings made of?

Did some tinkering today. Synced my carbs for the first time since I got my bike in May. Borrowed a Morgan Carbtune from site member VFRpilot Allan. Syncing these K3 carbs makes the bike run smoother than a babies (behind)  ;)  The biggest thing I noticed is the take off from a stop. Very smooth and responsive without a hint of a burp or gurgle or hesitation. I have never rode this bike to 8 grand so fast, feels like a different machine

Definitely heard a tapping/ticking on the way home...A noise that was there before the rebuild. Pulled the valve cover off the 550... perfectly lubed, no signs of any damage.  Broke the tach drive gear in the process.  Told the bike to catch a boat to #$%*_offity_land.  Grabbed a bear and started looking at craigslist for a GSXR or fz6R.  Rash decisions have been made on my account due to a few too many beers.  Hopefully tonight isn't one of those nights.

Yeah, I usually try to stop drinking before I start grabbing bears.
All kidding aside, you may need to walk away for a little bit to clear your head before you make any decisions.
