You're polishing definitely improved it a bit, looks good. How'd the rest of the bike look?
i cleaned up a filthy head and barrel,i just blended where the seat is inserted in the exhaust ports, someones already scooped out the bowl area a little.i also de burred the inlet manifolds and matched them to the head.this 550 barrel has been overbored to 61 mm,i was told by the old bloke i got the motor from it only needs rings, ive had a lot of stuff from this guy over the last couple of years and he has tools lying in dirt and open cases in the weather etc,it had been assembled less the rings,i found a few bits in the bottom end,and just discovered this after the clean up,someone has busted the rings on install and not noticed, there is even a bit of ring embedded in the gasket surface here, the bores look good but i havent miked them up yet.

Have you got pistons to go with the big bore cylinders? Cheers, Terry.

Ah, mufflers look like 500 pipes. Merry X-Mas to you as well!
Completed the top end of my 750/900F. Threading that cam into the chain and sprocket is tricky! Finally realized that the chain threads on first then the sprocket. Chain sits between the sprocket and the cam sprocket flange. Can't install the chain to the sprocket first or slip the chain on the sprocket from the far side, jusr the inside. That way the chain will fit onto the sprocket which will then slide onto the cam. Haven't done it in 10+ years. Just a LITTLE rusty and the manuals aren't real specific. All new hardware except cam towers and rocker shafts. Next up - install tensioner, set valves and degree the cam.

Became a polishing fool these past few days. Decided to do the other 550. BeforeAfter--- It is mirror like. Iphone cant capture to best. You can see how shiny the tops of the carbs became.
more cleaning and checking, this might explain the broken rings, the smallest piston at 60.93 wont drop through any of the bores from the bottom, itll drop in from the top till that point,it appears it hasnt been properly hone finished and i doubt the ring gaps were even checked let alone piston clearance,i can see the high spot mark in the bores,it would have been hard squeezing that barrel down but this hero persisted,i think ill be able to rescue the pistons and barrel with a decent measure and hone through, this looks to be 750/61mm pistons in a 550 barrel.
