more cleaning and checking, this might explain the broken rings, the smallest piston at 60.93 wont drop through any of the bores from the bottom, itll drop in from the top till that point,it appears it hasnt been properly hone finished and i doubt the ring gaps were even checked let alone piston clearance,i can see the high spot mark in the bores,it would have been hard squeezing that barrel down but this hero persisted,i think ill be able to rescue the pistons and barrel with a decent measure and hone through, this looks to be 750/61mm pistons in a 550 barrel.

What sort of hone are you using Dave? I've got an Ammco adjustable hone here, they're fantastic tool, you can get a very straight cut out of them, and I've known guys to use them to take a cylinder out one oversize, (long and tiresome process, but doable) if you've got access to something similar, it'll make your job easier. Cheers, Terry. ;D

thanks teryy,i have a mate with an engine reconditioning shop,he has flex hones etc, when he re opens ill measure the bores up properly.

I tried to think of some way to calculate the best way to improve my handling on my 75' CB400F; does anyone know the rake and trail dimensions of my frame ??

Take a look at this and has some external links as well.
http://www.denoonsp.com/user/image/v3-issue1.pdf

Stock tires rake is 26.5mm trail is 85mm...Page 5 of link gives good details

Washed the engine cases in a bathtub full of diluted Simple Green. Hoping to have them ready for blasting tomorrow then paint.

While I was cleaning the chamber and in./ex. ports in the head with a rotary tool and emery disc, I thought it would be worthy to remove the aluminum spigots so I could get in deeper (that's what she said).

After getting the tools and applying a ton of heat, I finally broke it loose. Holy sh*t those things are on there. In the end, it wasn't worth it. Only managed to strip it out so I had to debur it and stick it back in with JB Weld.

This was covered in another recent thread. Do not remove the intake spigots. There is no need to and usually results in pulling the threads out.

I recently saw some nice anodized replacement spigots in different colors for the 750, what would be the best way to remove the old ones without doing damage.?

Ordered new front OEM copy front blinkers and shorty stems (early style that double as headlight bucket bolts) so that I can fit them back on with the new clubman bars.  Just couldn't bear the thought of sticking a set of those tiny modern ones on this bike.

Today I replaced the horn with a little Stiebel replacement horn (clearance at Meijer for $10).  I replaced the original with a compact air horn a couple years back and then it died this past summer.....so put the original back on....but it quit as well.  Hopefully this one will last.   ::)

BTW - I used on of my Christmas gifts for the first time....

I asked for the plain round shaped seat....this one's a little over the top and is labeled a "harley style".....but I won't complain.  It's WAY more comfy than sitting on an inverted bucket like I used to!  I feel like I should be wearing chaps and fringe when I sit on it, though.... ;D

What did I do to my bike?????? I freaking rode it on both Christmas Day and today also.  Now that may not sound like much, but how often does one in a snowy climate get to do that. 40F-45F and sunshine. Had to get out and enjoy it since they are talking colder and snow tomorrow and the rest of  the year.

After having experienced what it takes to remove just one, I highly discourage it. It's locked in there with some type of thread locker on top of being a fine pitch thread. Unless you're repairing a broken one, I'd just leave it. Only reason I wanted to remove it was to get that last bit of carbon in the port but I think I can live with it.

Others have done it with success. Just requires a LOT of heat. If you have acetylene, zapping it with that would probably do better than a propane torch.

Must use a 6 point 36mm socket. I found one at O'Reilly's Auto for $20. You can find a 12 point at Sears but I know the 12 will mar the spigot.

Been crazy like that around here too...record lack of rainfall for this time of year, nice clear skies, at least what I can see out the window at work, but still...dark when I get there, dark when I leave..frost on the tank and seat in the morning..

Resynced the carbs. Now it doesn't sound like it's skipping, and has better low end throttle response and performance.

Also installed a 125db horn from NAPA.

Nothing on my bike today, but Cliff (Maduncle) brought his CB450 hubs over so I could remove the bearings. I had to make a special bearing retainer removal tool for the rear hub, which will be handy for me too, as it'll also work on CB750 rear hub bearing retainers. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I need to start a new thread "what did Terry do on my bike today"!

Apart from calling in the professional help for bearing removal - I spent some time on the 'net researching the original Honda CB450 Candy Blue colour to see if I can get my frame, swing arm and other parts powder coated in a blue that matches.

Not today... but yesterday I pushed the fzr1000 outta the way, messed around with my carbs a bit and took the k3 out for a Christmas Day ride. Was happy to see that at least 3 other riders were as crazy as me to ride on the slippery streets at just above 0 degrees celsius :D

Well we had a "White Christmas" here Dave, actually it was friggin' scary. About 4 pm on Christmas Day all hell broke loose and we had floods, hail storms and even a couple of small tornado's. I was with the wife's family at my mother in laws place and we copped some really big hailstones that smashed the windscreens in several cars parked in her street, and as soon as it backed off we drove back to my place to see if we were OK.

Well the poor little Hyundai was driving thru water up to it's doors, past cars that had been drowned, but it made it home ok, even though the usual 20 minute drive took over an hour due to the flooded roads. I got home and the house had narrowly missed being flooded, we're on a block that slopes down to the creek in the park behind our house, so when the drains in our street were overwhelmed, the water ran down across my front yard, around my house, down thru my driveway and patio, and into my garage, which had a bout 4 inches of water in it when I got home. I've now got a nice cover of topsoil from my front garden over my garage floor. Still, on the bright side, the hailstones I collected were handy in my Scotch and coke! Cheers, Terry. ;D

xmas day, pulled the bike out, and adjusted the valves, as well as pulling the cam chain tensioner out, and checking how much adjustment i had left, which was heaps.

noted that it was a little sticky, so pulled it apart, cleaned and lubed, replaced in engine and allowed to spring forward, with the motor in the apropriate position ( 15 degrees past tdc on number 1).

sounds heaps better, funny how we dont notice the noises over time...lol

other than that, just been riding around far north Queensland=)
