'Twas a beautiful day yesterday, and to celebrate the fact that I've got 4 days off work, I decided that it was time to experiment with my POSA Fuel carb that I bought on EBay a couple of months back.
The carb came off a 750 engined chopper that had been sitting for a few years, and was missing the special throttle cable, so I made my own, by cannibalising a couple of stock "pull" cables so that I could have a neat setup with plenty of adjustability.
Installation was a piece of cake, and the whole setup was ready to go in around 30 minutes.
I hit the button, and it roared into life. "Roared" is the best way to describe the event, as I discovered that my beautiful throttle cable that took me hours to make was about 2 inches too short and was at maximum stretch once the tank was installed, so the slide was about 3/4 open when I hit the button. My poor old engine went from sitting around for the last week or so dormant, to suddenly revving at around 8000RPM! Bugger!
I re-routed the cable a couple of times, but it really needs a longer cable, so after mucking about with it for another hour or so and flattening the battery in the process, I gave up for the evening. I also managed to scare my poor 17 year old Kelpie #$%*tless when it backfired so loud that my ears rang for a few minutes afterwards (I'd inadvertantly cranked it with the fuel on and the ignition off, then turned the ignition on, and "BANG!" Fark!
I think it was Scottly who decribed the POSA carb as a "Bolt on gas leak" and he's absolutely correct. If you leave the gas on and open the throttle with the engine off, gas will cascade out of the venturi all over your engine. It's interesting that most of the POSA tuning threads that I read last night (after I installed it, of course) said to have a fire extinguisher nearby, I don't remember ever seeing this advice in my Honda manual...........
Anyway, I'm faced with either spending another day making a new cable and playing with jetting, while my dog and cats (and wife) freak out at the noises and explosive fumes emanating from my garage, or I just re-install my carbs, which were working great before this whole adventure started, and taking GZ for a ride to the pub. I think you can all guess what I'm gonna do, all this thinking is making me thirsty............. Cheers, Terry.
