Had to brush 1.5-2" of snow off Jeepie this morning.  Heavy wet slippery stuff.  Needless to say , I let Honda sleep in.  This afternoon, however, the temps got into the 40s and I woke Honda up and rode to work.  While it was so warm I took the right side cover off for access to the battery.  Been neglecting I for quite a while.  Voltage has been so low that the turn signal beeper won't sound until I rev the engine up a bit.  The led turn signals and electronic flasher still flash tho.  And the Pamco ignition fires the bike right up with the kick starter.  After cleaning up the terminals and topping up the battery, I'm going to install the quick connector for my new battery charger/maintainer.

Put 120 mains, runs alot better when accelerating. Does 5000 rpm@ 65 mph sound right?

Course my tach isn't working right either.

Have stock air box w/k&n filter and str8 open pipes..................

Adjusted valves (all 8 were out!), tightened cam chain, reset air screws on carbs so its not so rich on the bottom, cleaned 1 spark plug that was sooty. 55 degrees out, went for a ride and it runs soooo much better.

Okay - that may not sound like much of an achievement, but I have never done it before. So I followed the instructions in the manual and adjusted all parts required then tested the bike.

Damn thing would not move!

 

So I went back and re adjusted the parts (this time I redefined what 'resistance' meant when turning the adjusting screw) and this time it was magic.

The bike now moves off very quickly and there is no clutch slippage when I give it a quick bit of throttle.

Hmmm, today we were in the low-mid sixties.  Not too shabby for late January!

I always found it difficult adjusting the clutch on any bike for the first time.  It's something based on feel, and it can be tough to get 'right'.

bled the brake caliper rebuild and I have great braking and the phenolic piston releases perfectly.  The wifey helped me bleed the brakes and we had fun.

Pulled the timing chain from the XL250s.  I had hoped the top end noise was just the tappets but alas, no.
You can see the chain started to chew the case and even the trust washer on the shaft a bit!
To say it was a bit slack is an understatement.
At least the tensioner looks to be in OK shape.

Compression is also a bit... lacking.
I think I'm going to just go ahead and pull the head tomorrow since this bike obviously has way more than the ~7K miles showing on the speedo.
Anyone have a source other than Honda for a quality timing chain?

well my 650 has always been hard to start.  I got a new atarter and that helped some.  Today I tried to charge the battery .It was dead so I went to advance and purchased a new AGM.  It turns the bike over so fast and smooth its scary.  I guess once again I am a victim of the obvious.

Maybe I am just not used to it.

Yanno, after all these years on this forum, I finally have a 750 of my own.

What I did was take three pictures of it.

Slide back in the seat a little and tuck your head under the airflow.

Pulled my front wheel to change bearings, swapped my kinked fender with the nice chrome for my straight one with less than perfect (but not out of place) chrome, and picked up my custom drilled rotor from Little Horse Cycles.

Had some help carrying the frame up with the engine installed to the garage. Did my final polish of the forks.... I think that may have been the 6th time... NO MOre for them.... Tomorrow I will get the front end finished.

Also reloated the ignition switch under the tank with a 750 bracket I had laying around but don't really like it. Suggestions?

Open face - looks like Spaceballs. I am working on my position, just not used to it. Both my previous bikes had a shield of some sort.

now that the "lump" is back in i wire-brushed the long mounting bolts, sanded/painted the mounting tabs, polished the rest of the mounting bolts/nuts and loctite'd everything in place. 

wire-brushed the clutch cable adjusters, lubed the cable, polished the clutch lifter plate/nut, cleaned the clutch lever pivot/lubed with moly then installed the cable. 

fitted all the elec connectors and secured with cable ties, polished the locking tab/bolts/center thingy and installed the front sprocket (17t for more zip).  polished and installed the shifter and brake levers.

Looks great. Did you leave the front end together and remove only the top triple? How did you remove the paint and get it to polish so quick?

Steve-o, Nice upper triple and clamp.  Keeping it that way in and around the bar mounts are small pita but can be done.  I deal with that.

On the ignition thing, is the frame similar to the 750 up in that area?  I dunno, me thinkin' it is not.  Prolly can't mount it the same.  Can you move it a bit lower down the frame and turn it around to the back side of the frame to get in somewhat the same location as the 750?
