Changed out the rear wheel bearings in a friends bike (formerly my bike).  Long story short.....recently sold an '87 VFR700 to a friend.  The bike never had a hiccup while I owned it.  He came over to ride with me the other day and a few miles down the road, he stopped because of noise coming from the back wheel....thought it might be a sticking caliper.  He came over last night and we pulled the wheel.  Brake was great.....bearings were not.  This is what we found.  Yikes!



The bearing had gotten so hot on that side that it started to disintegrate and heated the axle to the point that the nut on the end basically welded itself on. 

I felt bad for selling him a bike with a problem, so I performed a "warranty repair" for him.  He's on his own now, though.

 Pretty common when the drive chain is too tight.
Probably find the transmission baring is about to fail or the case crack

It's quite possible that the chain has been run too tight sometime in the past (I only owned the bike for less than a year).  I'm not sure that's the cause here, though.  This particular model has three bearings in the back wheel.....two in the wheel hub and one in the sprocket assembly/cush drive.  It was the bearing on the brake rotor side of the wheel that went.....the other two were fine.  Even though all the bearings were the double-sealed type, there's still a grease seal on each side and the one on the side that failed was a bit ratty.....so I suspect that moisture/grime may have been at fault somehow.  It's hard to say.  You may be right, though.

Tried to get the carbs back on the original boots after a thorough cleaning. Forgot what a #$%* that is.

Tried to free my sticky throttle to no avail.

I'm just glad to have a bike in the garage again!

  Aside from making it legal I put 105 miles on her yesterday.  Rode it to my dad's house, he loves the old bikes and gets a kick out of seeing the work that goes into them.  I got home late and found out that my tank isn't as clean inside as I thought.  I also know my range to reserve is somewhere just past 105.  This pic was taken with the bike on the notoriously low CB 650 side stand so I'm thinking another 30-40 miles.

Ordered paint and decals to put the 550 back to Factory correct color.  Also bought a chrome headlight bucket and light ring for the 650.  also got anew front headlight stem to replace the bent one.  A little at a time

Finally signed up for my road test. My county is full already and had to schedule an hour and 30 min away. Also ordered my tail light for my 550F

Got my 75 cb550 back together with new rings, new primary chain and a cam from a 650. So far it's so much better than before but gonna have tuning issues with the carbs because the plugs look REALLY lean after the 2 test rides I've taken. I'm hoping I can get away with dropping the clips on the jet "needles" to fatten it up. If that's not enough then I'll be doing a jet change.

if they look REALLY lean as you said,id just go up one jet size,you can do that with out resyncing the carbs,umm,,you dont run pods do you?

Been riding it to work and back the last three days (I got the job four days ago). I work at the local Honda/Yamaha/Duc/BMW dealership, so I get to be around bikes all day. But it's exhausting as hell because I'm the shop #$%*. I wash bikes, pick up/deliver bikes, move bikes, and break down pallets all day. I come home tired and dirty every night

Each day riding back seems to get more and more sore. I've been speeding home just to spend less time on it :/ I might have to get some superbike bars or something. I'll have to see how my clip ons are when I get them (I should get them before Sunday, or on Monday, which are both my days off).

Since I was thinking about dropping the front end a bit anyway, it's okay to push the forks up in the triple tree enough to get the clip ons above the tree, right? I'm not really concerned about handling or ground clearance, btw.

Rode the K6 to work for the first time this year!  Took the long way home.

Call from powder coater that the Black bomber frame and assorted parts are blasted, baked, sprayed, and baked!  ready to pick up!

Ordering parts to finish the 900F last night.  rebuilding the brakes.  change your brake fluid every few years my friends, it gets nasty.

Looking forward to some rides as fun as this one.

At the moment it's got the factory air box with a uniflow filter inside and a Mac 4 into 1 exhaust. I can't say exactly what size the main jets are but I do know they're 1 step bigger than stock, I had installed the jets shortly after I had brought the bike back to life a couple years ago and I had put pod filters on it. The pods turned out to be a PITA to tune around so I put the factory air box back on then dropped the needle height to lean it back up just a bit though it still ran just a tad on the fat side. I have yet to touch the carbs at the moment because I was so anxious to hear it run and now that I have all 4 cyls sealing like they should then there is no escaping the fact that the carbs will need resynced. That's why I'm so pleased because it still runs so much better even though I know the carbs are way out of tune which means it's only going to get better as I get them dialed in.

Replaced the bars on my '77 750 Auto today with a set off a '78 K model. A little lower, much less pullback, a lot easier on the wrist and hand at freeway speeds. And no need to shorten cables or wires. It was a 30-minute plug & play job. Those original buckhorn bars were terrible!

yesterday had the chain master riveted together, installed it and finished the rear assy.  i then double-checked every nut and bolt on the bike (complete disass / refresh over the winter), refilled w/fresh oil and rolled it off to the side.  done. 

this spring i'll check timing w/my light, drain refill the oil in 200-400 miles and ride it.

Pulled the swingarm off.  Now to clean it up.  Then I can box it up and send off to HM.
