I've been slowly working on my BMW R100RS in order to get it back on the road. On Friday it had it's Roadworthy inspection and (pretty much) passed with flying colors! Not registered yet, but I borrowed a "Trade plate" from a friend who owns a bike shop, and took it for as ride over to visit Brian. (Bear)
It was the first decent "around town" ride I've taken it on, and it highlighted one real PITA, the shifter linkage. I had the same problem with my previous R100RS, the shifter linkage is just a bent piece of wire, and is sloppier than a 10 dollar hooker. I missed gears, crunched gears, found false neautrals, you name it, I still had a great ride, but it took the edge off my riding experience.
The weather was awful today, and being Mothers Day in Oz, I didn't have a whole lot of time to play with my bikes, so I decided to sort the linkage.
I rummaged around and found a pair of 6mm rose joints.
I couldn't remove the footpeg mounting bolt, it's a capscrew, but the internal hex was buggered, so I had to drill the head off it.
Once I had the footpeg/shifter mechanism off, I drilled and tapped the linkages for 6mm screws.
The weather really was terrible, and my work space was limited to "between downpours".
So I amused myself by grinding tracts of skin from my appendages. Where did I put those gloves?
Anyway, it all worked out, and I'm happy with the finished product, both aesthetically and mechanically.
I took it for a ride in the rain, and the shifting difference was incredible! It "snicks" into gear with no slop, shifts very positively and overall, just feels great. I didn't miss a gear, the lever was just where I wanted it, so I'm a happy camper! Cheers, Terry.
